I purchased a dvd reomote on ebay. it arrived from HK. i plugged in the remote receiver into the xbox without reading the instructions. Apparently when you plug it in to the xbox it permenantly codes the xbox. Unfortunately i had it set to the wrong dvd region, and now it will only play dvd's from that region.I did see a blog that said there may be a fix to permently set it to another region. Any ideas

Dirty disc, other region disc, not original game (copy) or just a bad dvd drive. The Thompson dvd drive on many of the original xboxes went bad pretty quickly. You can order a replacement dvd drive on ebay. The samsung replacement dvd drives are the best in my opinion.
This is unfortunately 'normal': an unmodified xbox can only play games made for the country (or 'region code') it was made for.
In order to play games from any region/country, especially from EBay or copied, you will need to get your XBOX 360 MODified: this service (e.g. Hardware Electronic modification) is offered by many technicians that can often be found at week-end computer fairs or Computer repairs shops. Make sure you get a quote before proceeding as the cost can vary enormously!
There isn't anything you cab really do without opening the xbox up.
ll DVD's have what is called a region code. this is a code that is specific to 5 regions. in North America, we are region 1, and Japan, they would be region 5. If the Xbox is purchased in North America, the DVD drive in the Xbox, is imprinted with region code 1. This mean it will only play region code 1 movies, and games.
The only thing you can do is to either mod your xbox, or replace the DVD drive with a drive from a different region, but this will make it so you can play dvds from your region.
you probably purchased a different region dvd. there is a code breaker for your dvd but it will stay on that code that you place in. ebay sells multiregional dvd players. and ebay also sells the codebreakers. look under multiregional dvd and search for the listing
To unlock the region limitation of your machine: (all the following is done on the remote)
Press <Home> Go to the Easy Setup Menu Go to <Setup> "Hover" the cursor block over the Lock symbol (don't enter yet) Enter 0000 on the remote A Congratulations message comes up. Press <Enter>

HK AVR 347-I took it back- everyone was frustrated and the verdict was that it just doesn't work. I have a Dennon now and it doesn't sound as good as the HK but it works most of the time. Not sure it the Harmony is the problem. I'm reading the Dennon manual now and it seems the Dennon remote can do what the Harmony is trying to do. Harmony support is awesome and we'll keep trying. Sooo- was there a trick to it?
