Every time i try a date to restore it says it cannot restore to that date it has done this 5 times
Have you create a restore point on that day before? you can't run system restore on the date haven't created.

first question is why are you restoring it at an earlier time? is your OS corrupted? or are you infected by a virus? if your OS is corrupted try to repair it by using your OS installer, boot from your installer cd and choose repair. if you are infected try to run an antivirus program.
SYSTEM RESTORE Windows XP: If you are using windows Xp
Switch On your
PC/ Laptop and log in to windows.
Go to 'Start'--->Programs--->Accessories--->System Tools--->Click
'System Restore'
A 'System Restore' window will appear.
Here you will have to check "Restore computer to an earlier time' and
click Next
Note: It is better if you could remember from which date you are
facing the issue, try to select a date prior to that date. The detail of that particular date should show "System
Checkpoint" and time on the right hand side box. Select that date. 1. Open the
Start Menu. A) Click on All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore. 2. Open the Control Panel (All Items View). A) Click on the Recovery icon. A 'System Restore' window will appear. Here you will have to check
"Restore computer to an earlier time' A) Click on the Next button Now you will find a window with Dates, Description and Type, Note: It is better if you could remember from which date you are
facing the issue, try to select a date prior to that date. The detail of that particular date should show "System
Checkpoint" and time on the right hand side box. Select that date.
Now you will find one Month Calendar window with Dates below, go to
the previous month by clicking the '
Now, Click on Next and System Restore will start and windows will take a
reboot.
After reboot your problem should be resolved.

Now, Click on Next and System Restore will start. Click on the Finish button and windows will take a reboot.
