53" color rear projection sony model KP-53S65 bought in 1999. The picture has often gone black, but come back to normal -possibly receiver's fault, but this time the tv turned off and when it tried to come back on its own, it made a loud buzzing sound that buzzed whenever the red light on the front blinked. i turned it off and when i tried to turn it on again, it continued to buzz the first few times, but around the fifth time, the screen would light up bluish with no buzzing and then would show the picture but the picture at first was extremely horrible. but then i adjusted the color and things and it is improved but the picture is still washed out and there are arched green lines running horizontally across the screen. tried different inputs to make sure it was the tv and the only thing that changed was the distance between the green lines. as far as i know there was no smoke or smell when it flipped out, but i'd love to keep it and fix it myself. any info would be great. and if i need parts, if you could tell me where to get them and how to put them in, that'd be great too.; ) thanks.
It sounds like your Green CRT ( picture tube ) is shorted. That's the one in the middle. Sony had issues with there tubes in those years. Sorry for the bad news. Even if you could locate the tube, it will be a matter of time before the Red or Blue does the same.
I've checked all of my suppliers and got the same message, NLA (no longer available) with the side note cannot order. I'm sorry but that seems the end of the road. I'm still in the on going process of helping another customer locate a power supply for a 1yr old LCD, lucky for him he took out an extended warranty and got the set replaced because his board is not available. I see this everyday especially with the off brand inexpensive sets. I know yours was not cheap, however, manufacturers are trying to rid the market of analog type sets.

From much of what I have heard about the tvs, when there is green or blue lines or color that do not belong, the set is wearing out. The optical block may be the problem. I have heard that the costs of repair and labor to replace the parts are expensive. Consider yourself somewhat lucky--many people on sites have much newer tvs than yours and are experiencing the same problems. My suggestion, starting looking for a new tv.

the screen control and the focus control on the flyback transformer need to be turned down a little

Convergence ICs are bad it causes the red and/or blue to jump out of alignment making it look 3D. You have to convergence ICs located on a large aluminum heat sink with an STK number stamped on them. You can purchase new ones for about 10.00 each. they have to be soldered in. If you can solder you should easily be able to repair this yourself. Let me know if you need anything further.
