Cannot find a head cleaner for Sony Digital 8 (DCR-TRV460)

Received message from camera a while ago recommending a head cleaning tape, but I can't find one except the Dynex brand, which gets terrible reviews for this camcorder. The camera is still recording and playing back normally, but there are blurry spots on the video. Can I clean my heads without taking it to a professional?

Yes you can clean the heads. It's a delicate procedure, but, requires no disassembly. But, I'm curious about your mention of "blurry spots." Typically, on a digital camera, the video when the heads are dirty, will either just appear as a white screen, or, will come out blocky and glitchy (like poor satellite reception). "Blurry" would result from a dirty lense or filter. However, to clean your heads, I would run to Radio Shack and buy cleaning fluid refils. Take a Qtip and dampen it with the cleaning fluid. Open the camera, remove the tape and look for the video drum. Lightly rub the Qtip along the drum horizontal to the spin direction (not across the grain). Turn the drum and clean until you have swept the entire circumference.

What does the video drum look like?

It is round, silver and circular. It is the largest item you see when you remove the tape and are looking directly into where the tape is inserted

Jittery video and sound, and now no playback

You may have damaged the heads if your cleaner tape was old and dryed out and had grit on it, buy a new camera head cleaning tape for a start, never rewind it as lots of folk do, if you do that all you do is put the old dirt back on the head.

Sony DCR-TRV460 not playing back, blue screen

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if a blue screen is displayed when attempting to playback video from the camcorder.
  1. Stop the tape.
  2. Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  3. Play the tape.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
  5. Clean the video heads of the camcorder using a dry head cleaning cassette.IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions for use provided with the head cleaning cassette. It may be necessary to use the head cleaning cassette more than once per session.
  6. Reinsert the tape into the camcorder.
  7. Play the tape.
  8. If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
  9. Insert a different tape with video footage into the camcorder.
  10. Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  11. Play the tape.
NOTES:
  • If a blue screen is still displayed, then the camcorder may require service .
  • If the tape plays back correctly, then the first tape may be faulty or there is a problem with the video recording.

Playback problems started suddenly

I had the same problem. I fixed it by gently dropping the camcorder on the carpeted floor. I know it sounds silly, but it really works. I've had to do it twice, and it worked both times. I hope it works for you.
