TV repair A friend of mine has a TV 42" Akai that is malfunctioning. The local technicians in Macao say, there is no way to repair it, need to buy a new one... Is there a problem in a major component or design that make it no viable to repair? Any problem with power supply I can do by myself, and I will open it tomorrow.... thanks, Frank

The local technicians in Macao say, there is no way to repair it, it is totaly wrong it can bw repaired easily. need to buy a new one... not at all. Is there a problem in a major component or design that make it no viable to repair? in tv no major components except CRT. Any problem with power supply I can do by myself, if you have basic knowledge of electronics you can do it but as you know it is a high voltage device. so bettre to get help from tec. as per fixing is concerned as you are saying power supply it could be due to 1 main filter cap. 2 bridge rectifier diode. 3 switching ckt components like transistor or str. 4 print short. hope this will help. good luck.

Where can i find a replacement picture tube for my akai 42" LCD tv?

Due to residual electricity, replacing a TV's picture tube is very dangerous. I would NOT do it myself. Besides this, getting a new picture tube frequently costs almost as much as a new TV would.

You can contact a local repairman (if it's still under warranty just send it back), and get an estimate, but seriously consider getting a new TV.

Akai Television - With no repair man in site!

I worked for Akai tech support when it was still available over the phone. Now, they only have a website. The reason no one wants to repair the set is they have no idea how to obtain parts. During the end of their production run, Akai had a lot of problems with availability of replacement parts. Parts for the repair of your set are likely available from the company that distributed the TVs here in the U.S., however, the total cost of repair will cost you nearly or more than a new LCD. There is a circuirt board inside your TV that needs to be replaced. The cost of the part with labor added will bring the billl to at least $300. At walmart.com they have a 42" Viore selling for $578. They have a 32" Viore with DVD attached for $398, and a 32" 1080p for $349. There are other brands and selections for higher prices and other Viores as well, but I think you get the point. Do you want to spend a few hundred dollars repairing a TV that is out of warranty when the same amount of money will practically put you into a new set? If you decide you want to repair the one you have anyway, please post a comment with the model of the TV you have and I will help you obtain the part needed to complete the repair.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today.

Please post a comment if you need additional assistance so that I can help you further.

Akai 4290 power board

Yes, I'm sure the board is bad. I had the TV checked out by a local TV repair shop. I also opened the thing up to see if I could do anything with it and it's obvious that this is the board that has bitten the dust. The correct number for the board is AA98-00188A. I made a typo in the first post.

I have determined that mine had a problem with the composite input board. I was able to unhook the connections to this board inside the TV, after Akai, and the local repair guys couldn't figure it out....

The problem hasn't come back in a while, and since my setup is all HDMI/Component ins, I didn't affect me at all.

It looked like there was slight heat damage to the board, but not enough that it was caused by a design flaw, more like a manufacturing "accident".

Mine does the same freaking thing, and Akai Has zero customer support. The manual is utterly useless. I would be happy with 50 fewer features and a reliable TV. Why throw all that stuff in if it means more things can go wrong? I will never buy Akai. I am going to take it to a TV repair shop and see how ridiculous the cost is to fix it.
