Oven not lighting

The pilot light is on in my oven, but when I turn on the gas the burner doesn't light. The top burners work fine.

I have same problem. Pilot light in oven stays lit and when I turn oven knob on..flame from pilot light gets bigger but still does not show flames coming from the long burner. We have sanded off the thermocoupler and cleaned holes on the long burner..still no luck.

Sounds like the ignitor in the oven is weak and not building up enough resistance to the gas valve to allow gas to the burner. I would replace the ignitor if it is more than 3 or 4 yrs. old.

SOURCE: Tappan Gas stove

The pilot adjustment screw is located on the back side of the oven temperature thermostat. Lift the cook top to access it. Use a flat screwdriver to adjust... counter clockwise= bigger flame.

SOURCE: Gaffers and Sattler vintage stove oven pilot 1956 W54 series similar problem

My mother had the same problem with her Gaffers-Sattler range. No one could figure out what was wrong with it. Her local new appliance repair people said to contact J.E.S. Enterprises, Inc at www.theoldapplianceclub.net. Whew; thank God for that tip. They knew exactly what the problem was and repaired the unit for her. The stove is running again like a workhorse! Here is their number - 805-643-3532.

SOURCE: gas oven dosnt work

the pilot light is there for 2 purposes. number 1 to light the burner and number 2 to heat up the thermocouple, thermocouple is a wire that the flame from pilot suppose to surround by fire. if the pilot is to low it will not reach the thermocouple. you can take the gas line that supplies gas to the pilot and clean it with a safety pin or a small needle. you can test the thermocouple by heating it up with a blow torch on low heat, get it red hot and then turned on the oven. if the oven works clean the pilot, if the oven do not work, replace the thermocouple if separate from safety valve. if thermocouple is part of it replace the safety valve.
