Our sewing machine from 1972 is only sewing in reverse. We hope we can find a part to fix the problem. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
Take it in to be serviced by authorized Viking repairperson. I understand that for ~ $175 they will disassemble your machine, remove all the hardened grease from gears, calibrate the gears & set tension correctly, etc. A small cost considering these older mechanical sewing machines are GEMS and will provide you another 60 years of sewing bliss if taken care of properly.
It doesn't need a part for this repair. The reverse mechanism inside the machine is seized from old grease which has hardened. It should be seen by a technician so the part can be cleaned out. Don't be surprised if he finds a broken take up slide or a cracked pattern mechanism.
Get an estimate before you have any work done and ask about a warranty for the work they plan to do.It may be less expensive to buy a newer machine.

Make sure the left knob is set on straight stitch which also is for button hole and zigzag this may be a real dahhh but I had mine set on the white dot and it will sew backwards as well....make sure the bottom knob is set on 0....
The grease in the reversing mechanism may have turned to 'glue' as in my Viking . I used a hair dryer to soften the grease , and then oiled it.
The stitch length knob has the reverse button in the middle. Push in to release that button--IF it will release. Mine WILL NOT release. Good luck.
