We had the same problem and figured out that the "Try Me" tab (demo mode) was not removed properly which is a little plastic piece that is inserted in a hole next to the reset button. It's supposed to come out when you open the package, but it got ripped in half in ours. I took the plastic piece from another pixel chix package and put it in and out of the hole and it works now.

Ours was ripped in half and so I took a plastic tab from another pixel chix package we had and inserted back in the hole and then removed it. Then it started working!
