SOURCE: DVD drive cannot recognize DVD disk, but can read other CDs

I'm assuming you have tried a different dvd also and no joy, but it may need a lens clean or it is unable to read dvd anymore as the tracks are closer together than a cd and the alignment of the laser is faulty. Notebook roms are replaceable but only mainly from your notebook manufacturer. You could also use an external dvd writer via usb, although this then doesn't make your notebook as portable, if you need to read a dvd disc.

SOURCE: my laptop ate my disk

The CD drive is secured by a small small screw which is located on the under side of the laptop, it normally has a small picture od a cd next to it, if you remove the screw you can slide out the CD drive.
once you have remover the CD drive you can undo the small screws on either side of the CD drive and open the drive and remove the cd, reverse the steps to put it back in the laptop.
However please take care and be gentle
hope this helps

Hello, my otiplex Gx620 cd/dvd drive will not eject the cd it in. Is there any way of releasing it ? many thanks hannah x

Hi and welcome to fixya!

Just follow these few steps and it should fix the problem (but if the problem keeps on happening, it maybe time to change the ODD).
    • 1 Locate the optical drive that contains your stuck disk. You'll see a small hole on or immediately below the disk tray.
    • 2 Straighten the paper clip.
    • 3 Insert the straight end of the paper clip in the hole and push. You should feel it catch inside the latch mechanism.
    • 4 Pull the paper clip out gently. The disk tray will come with it.
    • 5 Remove the CD or DVD and close the tray.

Help my dvd drive is stuck and wont open

Desktop or Laptop computer wasn't stated.

With most desktop computer optical drive's there is a tiny hole located right under the optical drive tray.
(The tray the disk is inserted in)
A paper clip is straightened out, then inserted into the hole.
This is a manual override, and will open the tray.

There are some desktop computer optical drives, that the computer case has a door that flips down, then the optical drive tray comes out.
The door must be eased down far enough to see if the optical drive has the small hole.

With a laptop computer the optical drive is removed from the laptop.

Generally there is one small Philips head screw that is removed from the bottom side of the laptop, then the optical drive tray is opened with the paper clip, and the optical drive is then removed by using the tray as a handle.
The optical drive is then pulled straight out.

Once out the top cover is removed for access to the disk.

If this information is not what you seek, or you would like it explained, please post in a Comment, and we'll work together on finding a solution.

Eject stuck disk in Dell inspiron 1318 notebook

Take a Norwegian paper-clip, and straighten one end.
Gently push that end into the small hole in the face-plate of the optical drive.
When you feel resistance, firmly push another 5 mm (1/5 inch).
This should "unlock" the tray.
Press the open/close button, and the tray should fully open.

I PUT A CD IN CLOSED THE TRAY...THEN WHEN I RE OPENED THE DRAW OPENED BUT WITHOUT THE CD

The CD may have been inserted loosely in the tray and shifted inside the notebook during transit or use.
You can often remove the drive by locating a screw on the bottom of the notebook about 4-5 inches along the interior and generally near the vertical center of the Optical Drive's dimensions. Once located, remove the screw and use a small flat screwdriver or nimble fingers to remove the drive. If you encounter even moderate resistance, stop attempting to remove it and ensure the proper control screw has been removed to allow you to slide out the drive.
A second option in this scenario is to remove the flat or contoured bezel covering the Optical Drive fascia. After doing so, locate a pin-sized hole (sometimes labeled EE or with an asterisk) along the face and push it in using a small flat or Torx-based screwdriver, a pen tip, or an unbent paper clip. This will emergency eject (EE)the optical drive tray, allowing careful access to the interior and the lost media likely still inside it.
If you are unable to locate the media after following these guidelines, it is likely the media was inserted in the small space between the notebook casing and the Optical Drive's exterior surface. Remove the drive completely and attempt to locate the media. If you cannot, you may be incorrectly assuming or recalling it's initial placement. Double-check your brain's memory. :)
If you are convinced your media is inside the notebook and these solutions fail to assist locating it, the notebook may need much more extended disassembly to resolve this problem.

Games wont play. Problems with Disk player

If you don't have the tools to open your 360 go to best buy or an office supply store and get a can of compressed air and blow the dust out of the dvd drive. If that doesn't work then the lens needs to be cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol. This has worked for me on numerous occasions.

CD ROM is jammed-wont open

This has happened to me. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I'll place a CD or DVD in the tray and start to close it without making sure that the disk is seated flat in the tray. If it's ****-eyed the CD wil shatter when the tray is closed. The only way to remove the pieces inside the CD drive is to take apart the CD drive. Might be easier just to replace the unit. They run from about $25.00 to $75.00. One other note: You can try to open the tray manually by inserting the end of a paper clip into a small hole on the front bezel of the drive.
