Question about Hitachi 46GX01B 46" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Bad picture The unit is almost 9 years old. So I'm wondering if it is worth fixing. The unit gives off a not so clear image. I have tried to make adjustments to to contrast etc. and no better. Is it worth repairing or not. And what do you think it may need.

Have you taken the front screen off yet and cleaned the lens and mirrors? Dust and dirt, and specially nicotine gets on these surfaces and clouds up the picture really bad. If you clean the set and this does not help, you probably have bad picture tubes, and I would not invest in new tubes at this point, or there could be bad power supply capacitors. Good Luck

If you do not know what capacitors are my friend, you should not be messing around inside this TV set.

HCL652W picture faded will bulb replacement fix this

I would say that it is not worth replacing the bulbs. I had a similar experience with an old rear projection TV like that and I just cleaned all the dust out of it as well as I could. i cleaned the back of the screen, the mirror that the image reflects off of, and the bulbs themselves. I used a dry micro fiber cloth so as not to scratch anything. doing this might help you some, but if it is working and it is bright enough for you after a few minutes, I would just live with it until you can upgrade to a newer TV.

My Hoover floormate motor started smoking. It is over 9 years old. I keep the floor brushes clean. I am wonder if replacing the mother is worth it.

MSRP on this motor is $69.95. Labor may be another $30.00. I often see these units in thrift shops, which may be worth a try.

The starting relay may be the culprit and is very inexpensive to replace. It is probably worth fixing.
After it is fixed, make sure you get the condenser fins cleaned.

Bad very bad.
It's bad solder connections under the G.P.U.
Trust me I know, I re-flow about 2-3 a day .
but the units are normally about 2 1/2 -3 years old
and 60% are Microsoft reworks. you can tell this by
a black dot on the safety seal .

You have 2 options Fix it you self , if done right you should
get 2-9 months sometimes more.

Or have a shop re-flow the G.P.U. . cost 80.00 or so.
you should get 3-12 month hard to say with these unit.

TV has sound but no picture

Everything is worth fixing provided the price is right.  However, in this case it's probably not cost effective to repair the unit.  Start with the easier fixes, such as bulbs, etc.  Even then, some of the components can be quite expensive, or simply unavailable.  I would suggest getting a quote from a local repair shop in order to make an informed decision before you get to far into it.  You could end up spending just as much to repair it as you would on a new unit.
