Same problem, yeah, you can put a fan on the back to make it work for a while. I've done that... I've also replaced the fan, but it still doesn't turn.

Something else wrong for mine. Probably something expensive...

  • Anonymous Jan 22, 2009

Fan stopped turning. Fan turns manually-had a guy come out to replace the fan motor-but the motor wouldn't turn the blades.
I just put a blowing fan directed at the compressor-see if that works. If so, i'll be back :)

The conmpressor/s run 23.5 hours per day. Honestly I wake up in the
night and there they are running away, well not really running away
because if they were i would be really reallt please. They are loud
    man. So loud.

I hate this - please make it stop. An engineer
thas visited 5 times but they have not fixed it - all they do is cash
in on the warranty that this brand new appliance has. Make it stop.
    Please....

My kenmore refrig (freezer on top) has started dripping from tube near temp control inside of frig. I think it might be related that one month ago - electric was off since not at apt for one month. Doors...

Your defroster inside the fridge may not be doing a good enough job to keep the drain from freezing up. Check to see if the drain pan is frozen over in the freezer section. I took the cover off the inside of the freezer and wrapped a piece of uninsulated 14 gauge solid copper wire around the heating element and pushed one end down the inside of the drain tube and wrapped the other end around the heating element. No problems since.

Model # bx2255w Amana Refridgerator bottom freezer works but refridge isn't cooling any more. Is it time to retire our approx 15 year old fridge or is there an easy fix?

If you have high humidity or the door gets opened a lot, the evaporator coil may need a good defrosting. There are defrosting devices in the unit like the timer, heating coils, thermostats that could be bad. There should also be a small fan in the freezer that transfers the air to the refrigerator section. If that's not spinning only the freezer will work.

If you find the fan and it's working you can do a thorough manual defrost by removing the food, unplugging the unit and letting it set for a day with the doors wide open. Have some big towels handy :)

After a day, plug it in and see what it does (don't add food, yet). If it cools down then you will know that the compressor is still good and it's worthwhile to fix.

Easy fixes: Timer and fan.
Moderate fix (cheap part - more labor) - Defrost thermosat
Pain in the **** fix: Defrost heaters.

FREezer works fine, frig will not go less than 40 degrees and unit never cuts off

the problem is the freezer drain is plugged up. when the fridge goes into defrost, the water that is suppose to drain out has no where to go. so it refreezes . that ice has plugged up the blend air vents between the freezer & the fridge.
1st put your food in a cooler. Unplug the refridge.
(you may want to take pictures as you go.for the reassembling)
open up the freezer, remove the rear panel, & the bottom panel (if possible)
you will see the coils, underneith the coils you will see an metal tray. it will probly have ice on it.
with a blow dryer, heat the ice till you see the drain . now that drain has to be cleaned out.
that drain runs down to the bottom of refridge into a drain pan. with a wet vac , attach it to the drain tube, until you fell suction in the freezer. small amounts of hot water does help.
( it usually gets plugged up from bugs)

next , open the fridge ,on the ceiling of the fridge.there will be a plastic cover (most models) remove the cover carefully. usually there are 2 passiges from the freezer to the fridge. that is where the cold air drops into the fridge. there will probally be ice in these passages, which has to be removed.(be careful with the stirofoam)

once you have cleaned out all the ice ,reinstall all those pieces.
plug back in the refridge. It will tak a day for it to get cold again.( hint get 2 bags of ice to help speed up the cooling down process)

My refridge and freezer would stop working

there is a saftey overload switch on the compressor when the compressor is over heating it cuts out. when the fridge is turned off it resets the switch. So now the compressor has burned out totally. you more and likely need a new compressor

Bad Smell in Fridge

To remove odors:
1. Remove all items from refrigerator or freezer. Throw
out any spoiled foods. Take out removable parts and wash
them and door gasket with mild detergent in warm water.
Rinse well and wipe dry.

2. Wash interior walls and door liner with solution of 1-2
tablespoonsful of baking soda to 1 quart warm water, and
wipe dry. Leave door open and let it air out well, with a
fan directed toward inside, and opened windows if climate
permits.

3. If odor still remains, try one or all of the following
means of odor removal.

a. Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow
glass casseroles, pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined
with foil) and put pans on shelves to absorb odors, or on
the bottom and in baskets of chest freezer. Leave open
and unplugged.

b. Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to
remove odor molecules from air) at some department store
housewares sections, appliance store, or pet shop. Spread
out on shallow pans and put on shelves of refrigerator.
Turn refrigerator on low setting and run empty a few days
so odors will be absorbed.

c. Spread cat litter in shallow pan in cabinet, turn on
and run empty a few days. If odor is disappearing but is
not all gone, replace old litter with fresh litter.

d. Pour several ounces imitation vanilla (not pure
extract) in a shallow saucer, put on shelf and let run
empty a few days.

e. Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the
refrigerator and let run empty several days. A slight
coffee odor may remain, but will disappear after washing
again with baking soda solution.

f. Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper.
Set a cup of water on the top shelf or sprinkle the
newspaper lightly with water. Allow refrigerator to run
for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer
but has been effective in removal of strong odors.

g. Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions
exactly. Several companies manufacture a liquid
concentrate which sells for about $3.00 for 1/4 to 1/2
ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and
placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or
in a room.

Three of many brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on
Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores,
"SuperCD" IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales,
Avenal, New Jersey, available in pet supply department
or special products in grocery, or "Clean-Air" at some
appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital
Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and
quickly shut the door. Repeat.

4. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it
has probably penetrated into insulation. Contact an
appliance service company for an estimate on cost of
removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If cost
is too high you may prefer to get a new appliance. It
could be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where
the odor will not get into the beverage.

Fridge odor

There are a couple of methods to help remove odors from a fridge. The first is a cookie sheet with baking soda spread across it left in the fridge for several days. The other is something called Activated Carbon. Most stores sell it as a carbon odor filter and it is pretty cheap. It actually works better then the baking soda so I recommend you pick some up and just leave it inside the fridge. You can also put this behind your fridge or wherever you have foul odors. Hope this helps.
