Switch bad on shop vac how do i bypass it - Craftsman 17765 Canister Wet/Dry Vacuum

Take it to your local vac shop for repair. Switches are not that expensive.

Very rarely do vacuums have a fuse in them. You probably have a bad switch or possibly a bad motor.

You should simply purchase and install a new switch. It's not safe to bypass the switch as when you do, the entire electrical load is placed on the wall prongs when you plug in or unplug the vacuum. Depending on the brand of vacuum, you can easily order parts and replace the switch at a nominal cost.

Monica, I highly recommend you replace the switch. By passing the safety of a switch on any appliance or tool endangers both yourself and those around you. Just to by pass the switch, you would need to disassemble the appliance. If you are going to do this then get a replacement part and replace it. :) Safety comes first , especially where mechanical and electrical devices are used.

I got a replacement switch at a local electronic supply store: Philmore Miniature Rocker Switch part number 30-043. Shop vac changed the switch recently to two push buttons from the old rocker style. This update works a lot better.

I just picked up a similar model someone was throwing away. turns out there is a thermal fuse inside the motor housing that blew. I just need to find the values of the fuse and repalce with appropriate size. motor runs when fuse is bypassed.

I had the same problem with the same model. Turned out to be the thermal fuse on the motor housing, between the switch and the windings. Took it apart and replaced the melted solder with 14 guage copper wire. Works fine! No thermal protection but I don't use it for long at a time anyway. Check the switch for continuity, if good then check the thermal fuse for continuity. If good, it's the motor.

Could have a bad switch, bad cord, or a problem with the motor.
