In my case the printer head was going all the way to the left and ending up "stuck" there. The print head could still be moved easily from left to right manually but when you turned the printer on it ended on the left side and I got the 5100 error.

I turned off the printer and disconnected the power. I took a flash light and carefully inspected the clear ribbon. In the middle there was a bit of goop on the clear "timing tape", about 1cm long. I used a clean paper towel with a bit of alcohol on it along with a rubber coated pen to keep everything away from the grease on the track and gently hold the ribbon in place while I cleaned the goop off of the tape. After that the 5100 cleared and the printer is working again.

It looks to me like the clear tape is just an indexed strip that's used to tell the print head how far it has moved. With some of the index obscured by the goop the print head thought it hadn't traveled as far as it had because it was reading fewer lines in the index. The goop was probably some grease from the track the print heads go back and forth on. Not sure how it got on the tape, but cleaning it off solved the problem for me.

I have no idea what the long term effect of ink on the plastic tape will be, but it got the printer working when I needed it and saved me from having to have it professionally repaired.

5100 error is a carriage error. Could be caused by the carriage unit, timing strip, logic board or carriage motor. Check that nothing is obstructing the carriage from moving freely and that the clear timing strip is ok.

SOURCE: Canon Pixma MP830 error 5100

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.

SOURCE: canon pixma mp540 error 5100

dear,
Error 5100 points to a "carriage jam"
The carriage is the assembly that contains the printhead and cartridges.
This error can be difficult to solve because various things can cause it.

Since this is a new printer, maybe there is some packing or packing tape that is obstructing the carriage.
Verify that the carts and printhead are installed properly.

Check the gears as best you can for any obstructions.

If the carriage moves to a center position when you open the cover as if to change cartridges, try a reset to clear the error message :

1. Turn off printer (use button, don't unplug)

2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button.

3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go.

4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go.

5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking.

6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times.

7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button once more.

8. Your printer should respond as normal

Sometimes you have to try this a couple of times, if you've never done it before.
If this does not work, unplug, wait 3-4 min, then re-plug in. Enjoy..

Testimonial: "Really understandable answer, but unfortunatelly, it seems that my printer is dead. thx. L."

SOURCE: cannon pixma mp510 ~ error code 5100 help

Error 5100 is Carriage error.Possible problems in:
- Carriage unit
- Timing **** strip film
- Logic board assembly
- Carriage motor
First, make sure there is no paper jam anywhere in the machine.. look inside, rear, where the paper tray (output) is, etc to see if you find any shreds or torn paper that may have gotten stuck and you didn't see.Look carefully in the zone of Purge unit, using flashlight in the right side on printer. If this not help your printer need service.

Error code B200 PIXMA MX452

Error B200 is a print head overheat error. Just need a new printhead. You should see the power and alarm lights flash on and off 10 times then repeat the cycle. That's confirms the fault more than the error code. Its very simple to fit a head, just be careful putting the new one in as it's easy to break the pins in the carriage. No force is needed when fitting the head. Just let it drop in and lock the lever. Try taking out the old head first and gently clean the contacts at the back as they can rarely make poor contact with the carriage pins.
Good luck
