Re: nero 7 essential problem
You need to run the update feature, Nero when installed fresh might not have the profile of all the latest CDwriters,
also you need to check the "Recorders" options in the menu, it may just be that you need to change the setting to use the recorder that you have, if no recorders are listed please see 1st paragraph

Was the Windows 7 installed from a clean slate or you upgraded from Vista to Windows 7? If you have upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, then this is definitely a driver problem. You can try to update the driver by going to Device Manager, check if the DVD drive is listed. Pull down the drop down list, and right click on the devices listed under DVD/CD-ROM Drives and choose Update Driver Software.
If the DVD drive came with a software bundle (e.g. Nero Burning Application) Try reinstalling these application under Windows 7 Environment.
Not an exact solution to your problem, but I feel a better solution. Let me explain.
I used to use Nero 7. Then it seemed to make mistakes all the time. Error this, and error that. Removed it, used registry cleaner, reinstalled it. Fine for a while, then the errors came back. This became very monotonous.
I started downloading ISO files, of different Linux Ubuntu operating systems. Recommended burner software was a free version. Infra Recorder. I uninstalled Nero, and installed Infra Recorder. Haven't had a problem in a year and a half!

The Nero software came with InCD, which is a program that allows you to drag files directly onto the CD without having to run CD burning software. It's a novel idea, but I don't think it works all that well. If you're not planning to use it, then uninstall it. If you can't find it in the "Add/Remove programs" list, then you may have to uninstall the Nero software and then reinstall it but unselect to have the InCD software installed.
