Thermostat blinking change air filter

If its 1 blink every 3 seconds its normal operation.
Otherwise, this is the meaning of the various blinks:

No blinks = no poilet light (not enough power (in millivolts) to keep it lit.
2 flashes = insufficient voltage (in millivolts) to gas valve.
4 flashes = high water temperature (over heat sensor activated.
5 flashes = water temperature sensor failure.
7 flashes = gas control valve / thermostat failure.
8 flashes = Only occurs if the gas control valve or Temperature knob has been turned off And the thermocouple continued to produce electric power.
9 flashes = Combustion chamber temperature sensor open or shorted.
10 flashes = LDO occurrence was detected in the combustion chamber (contaminants).

Some thermostats allow you to change the differential value - that is how far below the heating (or above the cooling) set point before calling for heat (or cooling in the case of air conditioning). The built in 1 degree differential setting provides the most even temperature in the space at the expense of more frequent furnace firing and stopping. Many people prefer this mode as opposed to allowing wider swings in temperature for less frequent furnace firing and stopping. If you wish to change this setting, you'll need to replace the thermostat as it is not user adjustable in this model.

My model is the psp511lca but it may be the same type of reset. I have a dial I turn to the "change filter" option and then press the up and down temperature buttons simultaneously and hold for a few seconds. When you turn the dial back to "run" the change filter light on the display is gone.

To reset the air filter indicator:
1. Open up the control panel and turn the dial to "Air Filter"
2. Press the temperature up and down buttons simultaneously
3. Turn the dial back to "Run"

1) Try changing both thermostats. Thermostats are frequently defective. Don't change 1, change both, using generic parts from hardware or home center or plumbing supply.
Be sure to put-back insulation and cover over thermostats so they are not exposed to cooler air and cause misread of tank temperature.

2) Next step would be complete 30 minute troubleshoot, that would isolate the problem and give understanding of water heater operation.

The red reset button or ECO or energy cut off turns off power to electric water heater.
The ECO responds to temperatures in excess of 150 degrees F.

Preliminary work:
You can use thermometer to check water temperature immediately after ECO trips.
Compare water temperature against the thermostat setting.

There are 4 things that can cause ECO to trip:
1) Bad thermostat is sticking and letting element continue heating water, or ECO is reading incorrect temperature.
2) Factory installed insulation and cover missing from tank, and thermostat is exposed to cooler air and misreads tank temperature.
3) Element shorted to ground in center of element. This completes 120V circuit to ground which will cause element to continuously heat the water.
4) Loose wire near ECO causing high-heat electrical event.

Solution:
Check for missing insulation.
Check screw terminals for signs of high heat and burning >> tighten screws.

Change your air filter, if the system has to work too hard, it will over heat. If the filter is allowing air flow and the system still shuts off it is the thermostat. Keep in mind the Thermostat gauges the temperature where the thermostat is located, if its next to a running fireplace it will think your entire house is that temp.
