Tannins are a series of hydroxyl groups connected together (that is long chains of H Hydrogen & O Oxygen bonds). Tannic acid is a series of dozens of these hydroxyl's, but there are many other naturally occurring and synthetic Tannins. Tannins love to react (join up with) with other complex molecules like proteins, to form strong polymers. They have been used in tanning hides into leather for centuries.
In the case of the carpet cleaner, I suspect that they bind to whatever brown stain gunk you had in your carpet then form a new compound that can be rinsed away :) How did it work ?

How can I remove tannins from water

Tannins which is water that has organic material from decaying foliage can be a bit of an issue with your equipment especially the filters but for the most part is an aesthetic issue. The only way to remove the tannins is pre-filtering before you put the water in the hot tub. You can purchase a purestart pre-filter you attach to your hose when filling your hot tub. If that does not do the job there are some applications from MetalTrap that may aid you as well. If all else fails you may have to look into something more industrial like Tannin Filters Tannin Filter Systems Remove tannic acid color from well...

Why is my tea cloudy?

The scientific reason for the cloudiness of tea is the precipitation of the tannins in the tea that occurs when the tea is cooled. Cloudiness does not affect the flavor of the tea.
  1. Stronger brews tend to cloud more readily than weaker ones.
  2. High quality teas cloud faster than others.
  3. Hard water also has a clouding affect on tea

Add a small amount (1/4 cup) of boiling water into the brewed tea to help reduce the amount of cloudiness.

What is chemistry?

Chemistry - is the science of matter and the changes it undergoes. The science of matter is also addressed by physics, but while physics takes a more general and fundamental approach, chemistry is more specialized, being concerned with the composition, behavior (or reaction), structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.

- It is a physical science which studies various substances, atoms, molecules, crystals and other aggregates of matter whether in isolation or combination, and which incorporates the concepts of energy and entropy in relation to the spontaneity of chemical processes.
