It is an indication of an unbalanced load. There is a mechanism that trips the safety switch that you trip when you open the top. by cycling the top, you reset the switch. Always include a model number and age.

Well I have the same problem the only way I have found that my washer works is that on the soiler level make sure you put that on the heavy. And that should work I know its a pain but thats what I do and my washer washs with out stopping

Hi, You can get to the lid switch by removing the screws that hold the control panel to the cabinet. This model has a fuse included with the lid switch.

May be the bearing in your direct drive shaft. If washer is a belt drive, the belt could be frayed

Most Frequent Causes for Washer won't spin. The lid switch assembly prevents the washer from spinning when the lid is open. If the lid switch assembly fails, the washer will not spin. To determine if the lid switch assembly is defective, use a multimeter to test the lid switch for continuity

Maytag performa stops during agitate or spin
All washers have a safety switch on the on lid. There is usually a slot that a plastic pin goes into to activate the switch. These switches are high failure parts. The switch is located on the underside of the top deck. It should check 0 ohms when closed. You can also jump it but then it would NOT stop when the lid is open ie; during agitation or spin cycle ( a safety hazard).

the lid switch is buggered the lid can be open while its filling but when it goes to start washing the lid needs to be shut so the lid switch isnt working so the machine thinks the lids open.

You need to replace the "Lid Switch" on the machine. Over time, the contacts in the switch become worn or dirt and lint gets in it and becomes faulty.

A LOT OF TIMES WHEN YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE LID AND SHUT IT TO MAKE SOMETHING START TO WORK, THERE IS A CONTACT IN THE TIMER THAT IS GETTING A BAD CONNECTION AND WHEN THEY DO, THEY GET REALLY HOT AND STICK TOGETHER. BY OPENING THE LID, YOU ARE SEVERING THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE CONTACT AND IT COOLS ENOUGHT TO RELEASE, ALLOWING THE CYCLE TO RESUME. I WOULD SAY YOU NEED A NEW TIMER.
