Hi, I've just bought a Toshiba laptop (Satellite) and am trying to connect to the wireless in my house. Both my housemates are able to connect to the network, my laptop is able to detect and connect to the network at uni, but it's unable to even detect the SpeedStream network in my house. Tried everything from manually entering the network to calling a couple of different IT specialists - no one seems to know what the problem is and noone knows what I should do next!!
Thanks for your help, after a week of spending hours on the phone to BigPond, Toshiba and Siemans, and talking with other IT specialists, none of who were able to figure out what the problem was, one helpful person finally directed me to: the modem's online manual! I was soon able to set it up myself, and it is now working. Experiencing emotions somewhere between frustration, relief and disbelief :)

Re: Can't detect network
Some models of Toshiba Laptops have a slide switch either on the side or front to physically activate the built-in Wifi.
Some models also will not work with some models of Access Points if using the built-in Windows Wireless Configuration Utility. A workaround is to install the Wireless Configuration Utility of the WiFi manufacturer.
If your Toshiba is using the Atheros WiFi chipset, you may need to install the Atheros 802.11a/b/g Wifi Client utility to use rather than than that pf Windows. The file name is atheros_wpa_client.exe and you can just Google it.
Hope this be of some help. Post back how things stand or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.

Please make sure that you have turned on the wireless switch on your laptop because this is a message that usually appears if the wireless on the laptop is disabled. Also please update the wireless drivers for your laptop from the Toshiba website.
Thank you for your time and best wishes for your effort.
If you have your router set-up with security enabled, you should try to re-set the router and then go back onto the routers "control panel" and re-setup the security. You can find out the correct way to reset the router and the correct address to enter into the browser to access the routers control panel by going to the router makers website and checking under Support
Ok, if your using Vista, what i want you to do is right click "computer" select "manage"
and then "device manager", then click on the + sign next to "network
adapters" and right click on the wireless network and "un-install" the
device, reboot the PC and wait for windows to detect the wireless
card and install the drivers for it, this will appear in the system
tray (bottom right hand side) when its done try to connect again

When you try to connect wirelessly to your network did get any pop up message like asking you for a network key WPA/WEP? if your wireless network is security enabled then you need to enter the security settings again on the computer since you re-installed XP the security settings that was saved previously was also wiped out.
May I know the exact model number of wireless router/access point that your trying to connect your laptop so that I can provide you with instructions on how to retrieve the security key.
Right click on the network icon in your task bar or in network connections in control panel and click view wireless networks, then when all the networks show, delete them all and close the window, next, a pop up will say found wireless connections click the pop up icon again and look for your connection in the list and click connect and enter the pass phrase Iif you have security enabled.
