The Audio settings are most likely set to surround sound and not Stereo. The Talking is put through the center channel when set to surround sound. If your only using a left and right speaker, the audio must be set to stereo. That is also may need to be set on the DVD player or any audio source to the TV

Can't hear myself talk

Dan, You should be able to hear yourself inside your head as the small hairs that vibrate in fluid in your ear canal will pick up your vocalizations. In any case you know what you're saying and it shouldn't be a problem talking to someone.
Now if you're listening to music really loud on those headphones and still need to hear yourself think, I suggest you turn down the volume. :)

What is the problem with loud noise when it comes to ears? Can it really do damage or is that just a story made up by people who hate loud music?

It’s actually been medically proven that prolonged
exposure to loud music and loud sounds can damage hearing in the long run.
Obviously trauma to the ear from something like an explosion can cause
immediate hearing loss, but music etc is more likely to cause a slow
deterioration.

It’s highly recommended to use ear protection when
engaging in very loud level activities such as mowing the lawn.
A study has also shown that listening to music while
exercising can cause further damage to hearing as the blood flow during
exercise is diverted from our ears to our arms, legs and heart – making the
ears more vulnerable to noise.
