I have a brother MFC 420CN that keeps turning on and off every minute or so. I managed to get the error message DF to come up, and was wondering if anyone knows what problem that reffers to?
Thanks

Re:
Did you had lightning strikes or a high tension the days before? DF means that the faxmodem which is placed on the pcb is in disorder. The pcb has to be changed (sparepart is more expensive then a new mfc!)

You said you replaced the cartridges. Were they Genuine Brothers' Cartridges?
My Brother MFC-240C, does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also I had with Brother's was problem with Color. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, or Blue Green, etc.The Generic Cartridges, also printed lines thru the words. That's what the Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY, or Take them to have them filled.
So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for the PRINTERS.
This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.
Do you mean "unable to clean"?If it this follow this instruction. Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41 or 4F the print head is defective. If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If numberis over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
press menu then start b/k copy then fourtimes arrow-up (tel.index). machine will be in maintenance mode. press start b/k copy: What two digit error code does the machine display? Post here again.

I realise this is an old question but I recently had a similar issue with our MFC-5860CN not receiving faxes and displaying the "Mn1" code. As it turns out "Mn1" means the machine is set to manual receive and was therefore not automatically receiving faxes. You will need to locate the "Receive Mode" option in the menu and change it to "Fax Only" or "Fax / Tel". Unfortunately I dont know what could have caused the turning off and on that the OP mentioned. I'm a little late to the party but I hope this info can help someone else!
5A means that the purge cam stopps abnormally when it is in use. This could be of a broken cam shaft. You have to replace the whole purge unit. This is a service job to do!
