Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller
It could be what is called an RF board its located just behind the ring of light you will need to probably buy a new one maybe on ebay its cheap enough, also to replace this RF board you will need to open your xbox 360 which will void your warranty!

Click the button on the front of the 360 console... which is to the right of hte memory slots... when the ring of light is spinning around click the button on the top of the controller... it will then connect to that system. There after it will always look for that system. so if you want to connect to a new system you push the button on the front of the system and then the button on top of the controller.....

That wont make a difference because the pads arent IR, they are RF. So as long as they are in range they should be found.

Tips for a great answer:
The Xbox 360 utilizes two
types of controllers: wired and wireless. Like most operations on a
video game console, configuring a controller requires little effort. You
can either plug the controller into a port on the Xbox 360, or sync a
wireless controller using the console's built-in controls.
