Sounds like you may just have some bare wires touching,Trace the wires from the ignition switch.

You don't have it connected right. The DC motor is 'polarity reversed' to change direction. That's what the controller does is reverse the polarity to the motor to change direction. If the motor is still working in reverse, then the controller is 'probably' okay. Recheck the connections you made.

This is a gas or electric 48 v or 36 v? what year model? F/R switch is a lever or a rocker arm? Club cars have made many changes over the years.

I recently replaced a F/R switch and just happened to write down which wires went where so maybe I can help. The front switch ( closest to front of cart) green/white wire to top contact, white/black to bottom.
Middle switch red/white to top, orange to bottom.
Rear switch green to top, black to middle and white to bottom.
