One problem with most point&shoot cameras is that they are designed to be pointed and shot. The camera takes care of things automatically, including focus.
The H50 doesn't have a manual focus mode. The best you can do for close-ups is to switch to one of the Macro modes. Press left on the control button (marked with a blooming flower) repeatedly to select the desired mode. See page 18 in your manual for full details.
This is becasue the replacement part you purchased does not include the backlight. If you want the back light, you will have to remove it from your broken LCD (using a very low power soldering iron) and solder it on the new screen. Look at the new part and on the ribbon cable, there will be two metal like contacts. This is where you solder on the old backlight. You will also have to (carefully) remove the backlight housing from the old part and connect it to the new part. I got suckered just like you did, but I was able to make it work.
The DiMAGE 7i has four different image size settings; Full 2560x1920, UXGA 1600x1200, XGA 1280x960 and VGA 640-480. The recorded pixel size in each mode is almost equivalent to an image captured with a 5 mega pixel, a 2 mega-pixel, 1.3 mega-pixel, 0.35 mega-pixel DSC respectively.
