Only two possibilities---- check out 1 by 1.
1)the scanner glass is dirty .or a hair like material is got stuck up on that particular side.so clean the scanner glass assembly from the upper side with a dry and clean cotton cloth.and then check out.if that works then the problem was dust.but if that does not works then .

2)in the scanner glass under it there is a assembly that moves ,that moving assembly is called scanner assembly.that scanner assembly has a thin tubelight fitted in it.that tube light is controlled by a small chip circuit .which is in that moving scanner assembly under the glass.that circuit is faulty.that circuit has ten points .if any of the one point is faulty at that particular portion the tubelight will not glow and the line will appear on each scanned document.
------------------------
TO SOLVE THIOS PROBLEM
the small chip curcit in the scanner assembly has to be replaced.the cost of that chip circuit is $23 .
a local printer reparing engineer will be helpfull for opening the printers scanner assembly and fitting the chip circuit.

please do rate the solution.
thank you for using fixya.
keep updated.thanks.

I have a big black line down the middle of my scans

If dirt sticks to the scan module, it will be scanned continuously and appear as a line in the output. Clean the glass with Isopropyl Alcohol. Dont use any other solvent.

Ones you have succesfully installed the product, you can try scanning a document with the paint program for example.

start -> run (or hold down windows key and press r) type in mspaint and press ok

now in paint, click file and from scanner or camera, scan a document by following the on screen instructions

Canon CanoScan LiDE 500F... Problem:

Ideally, if the scanner can be tried on another computer, that would determine if there is a hardware problem. If the problem persisted on the other computer, then the indication would be a physical hardware issue that would not be fixable at the user level. Just be sure that you have cycled the lock switch a few times leaving it in the unlocked position. Also, for testing purposes, make sure nothing is on the glass when scanning. This is mainly in relation to heavy items such as books. If an item is heavy enough, it could put enough pressure on the scanner glass to push on the scanning element, preventing it from moving and giving a false indication that the unit is locked.

Good luck.

Black line down middle of scan

Well I hate to give out bad news but if that line is in the exact same location on every scan it means that the element (the scanning light) has failed. Sorry that I could not earn a FixYa for you. If you need to replace the scanner I have had excellent luck with Epson scanners. Here is a link to a few on Amazon.com for refrence.

&field-keywords=epson+scanner&x=0&y=0
Just copy the link and paste it into your web browser. there are also some very good all in one options. I have had this one for a year and it works well:

Hope that was at least helpful.
