Underscore I have a Compaq Presario laptop, when it turns on it goes straight to a black screen with a white underscore, everything i've looked up about the problem i've seen them all with a blinking white underscore, my underscore doesn't blink though, and I have yet to find a similar problem. Any suggestions

It doesn't boot to windows. It doesn't boot anything. What I've read from similiar problems is they get the black screen after the logo comes up, so they can hit F keys to get to safe mode or boot manager, I can't. The very second it turns it, it immediately goes to the black screen with non blinking white underscore. No logo, no start up, nothing. Turn on, right to black screen. After looking for a similiar problem like mine for a month, I've given up, and turned to asking for help.

Since when you are facing this problem, did you make any recent hardware or software changes ?
And after you turn on your laptop, don't you see anything after that cursor(Underscore) blinking ?
I mean it boots to windows or not ?

If not try to remove your battery and keep it aside for 5 Mins. and then connect it again. Then try to turn on the laptop

SOURCE: Dell latitue D610 stuck on black screen with a blinking cursore.. help?

First, try and boot into safe mode by powering off your computer then powering it back on and tapping the f8 key, after that you should see safe mode and other options below it, click the first option which is safe mode, then go into your start menu and go to your system restore which in Windows 7 and Vista is located in accessories and then system tools, then choose a restore point earlier than the date you are on. This is a temporary fix and you will need to get a virus removal done asap. Hope this helps.

I've had my compaq presario cq61 for about 2-3 years. A while back it would occasionally have a kind of shaky/blinky screen but just in the past week it's like the screen has stopped working.

The problem may be due the graphics card or data cable or backlighting.

The data cable can be severed over time though opening and closing the display. This can be replaced.
The backlighting/inverter dies, some-times the windows desktop screen can be seen if one looks carefully. This can also be replaced.

Try connect your notebook to another computer's monitor via VGA or HDMI out.

If this works then the problem lies with your LCD screen.

Take care!

White Screen Compaq Presario CQ60

Regarding ; White screen , I flipped my notebook over and removed the power source(s) , power cord and battery. I then removed the three screws in the battery cavity and the two outside corner screws to gain access to the connection for the LCD and found a loose connection. It seems that the wire that connects to the screen was being moved every time I opened and closed my computer. So very glad to find that bulb and inverter board was not bad. Prior to this , I did try external monitor and found that all was okay as far as operation of start-up.

Compaq presario v6317 not turning on

Computer does not boot upThe problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needsreseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up thenremove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop andget them to test the RAM for you.

OK download that service manual, follow the troubleshooting procedures and you will sort your problem out in now time, i have a hunch, that your HDD, is faulty... and may need replacement. Anyway Download and use that manual, it's a generic one.. but will still work for you.

I have a compaq presario C700, it loads up to a black screen with a white arrow and doesnt go any further. i performed a check and it said hard disk error, is there any way to fix this

Yes, my friend, there's a way to fix everything. This may sound too simple, but, try turning the unit on it's face and tighten every screw that you see on the bottom. This works for keyboard issues and harddrive ones also. This is a very common fix amongst laptops regardless of the manufacturer. Thank you, Dana

I have a ten year old compaq presario. i turned it on and a black screen came up with a white underscore at the top left corner. the underscore blinks repeatedly forever! i have looked inside my computer...

It sounds like the Hard disk has failed. You might be able to replace it if you can get one from a computer swap meet. but you are likely up for a new PC.
