its difficult.. but not impossible... there r 2 push-buttons when you disamble the ps2 and u need to press them continuously in order to run your cd! here's the solution go to youtube and search play ps2 cd's without the upper tray cover....
Find a clear space, preferably out of direct sunlight, to set up your PlayStation 2.
Plug the AC adapter into the designated area on the back of the PlayStation 2 and then plug it into the wall socket.
Plug the RFU adapter or audio/video cords (depending on the model of your television) into the back of your PlayStation 2 and then into your television.
Plug your controller into the controller slot adjacent to the disc tray.
Plug your memory card into the memory card slot above the controller slot (see "How to Managage a PlayStation 2 Memory Card").
Turn your PlayStation 2 on using the on/off switch on the back of the PlayStation 2.
Press the eject button to open the disc tray. Insert a game disc and press the eject button again to close the tray and begin play.
Turn the PlayStation 2 off when done playing by either flipping the on/off switch or pressing the sleep button.

Found this which may help (and will void your warrenty):
When you take the top cover off of the PS2, you can see where the Reset/Eject ribbon cable plugs into the system itself. Right next to and slightly below here are three wires with three tiny color-coded plug-ins attached. They are just pressed into place and have a tendency to work themselves out over time. And depending on which one came undone, the disc tray will either always want to stay closed or always want to stay open. Either way, the operation of the disc tray will be erratic and problematic.
So it's a matter of using a pair of needle-nosed pliers to grasp and make sure that all three of these tiny plug-ins are fully inserted into the slots where they belong. Sometimes it's even necessary to very slightly lift the PS2 out of the bottom half of it's shell to gain better access to them. After they're all clearly in place, then it's a good idea to use the same needle-nosed pliers to make sure that the ribbon cable did not slightly pull out of place from where it is plugged in as well, or the Reset/Eject buttons will not work.
After all this, you can put the PS2 back together and voila...you should be good to go!

if there is a format disc error, it says "Please insert a Playstation
or Playstation 2 format disc." It is accompanied by a sound similar to
the browser, but with a more tense noise. This is caused by a disc
being so badly scratched that it completely fails to recognise the
format, or if there is a problem with the laser.
