Both HDMI inputs stopped working. I was told by a friend that even with a power surge that the cable box (also connected to power surge strip) can blow out the HDMI in a power surge - not sure if that's correct but how does one go about fixing it?

DVi to HDMI. ? hmmmmm
I recon you spend £49.99 and get a DVI & Audio to HDMI Converter. This will resolve the issue
SOURCE: 42LG50 TV - Intermittant sound problems with blu-ray HDMI input
You say this doesn't happen on regular cable or when playing a regular DVD. Hmm. Is this Blu-Ray player connected by simplink? HDMI is a bi-directional format cable, so there are cases in setups where your tv can send commands to your blu-ray player and vice versa. It could be a problem with your blu-ray player that it is sending for some odd reason a mute command to your tv. Or is processing a command that your TV interprets to be a mute command when playing blu-rays. Because if it was the TV itself chances are you'd see this when watching a normal DVD or on cable as well. Since you say you're not, it leads me to believe the issue lies with the blu-ray player itself.
SOURCE: connect tv to cable box with hdmi lead
You will need an HDMI to DVI cable which are available in the shops, even ASDA has one but I don't know how good it is. Or you can buy an adapter that will plug into one of the ends of the HDMI cable and then plug into the DVI socket at the back of the TV. The DVI input is video only so you will need audio leads for sound. These will connect from the output of your source, say, blue ray or sky HD (Left and right audio sockets ) to the audio L/R at the back left of the TV (on the block next to the three component video connections and s-video connections)
SOURCE: HDMI input does not work
Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Two things may cause the “No
Signal” message to come up are - no data available for closed captioning and a
weak signal input. Your TV is in the Closed Captioning Mode. To turn it off
simply bring up the on screen menu and scroll down to the part that says closed
captioning and turn this function off! With the closed captioning block
displayed and the program being viewed is not sending out closed captioning
signals the TV will display, No signal!
I’ll suggest you to run the HDMI from the PVR (personal
video recorder) directly to the TV (mute the TV), and then run the optical
audio from the PVR directly into the receiver's optical in. The closed
captioning is something that is addressed in analog broadcasts, but not
necessarily digital broadcasts. Try using Component cables if this doesn’t make
a difference. After using components cables the issue will be resolved. Please
do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further
assistance.
Thanks
Rylee
