If you have already adjusted the volume of your cellphone, then the problem is in the earpiece. If the phone dropped accidentally the earpiece loosens its contact and you need to open the phone to adjust the contacts. If the phone was not dropped, the earpiece is busted and needs replacements.
Chances are the speaker is probably the only problem. They get packed with dust and stop working. If you need any help disassembling it let me know. I may be able to point you to some pictures of disassembly directions.
I have a sprint razr and this is what I did. First you go to the menu and click on settings. once you are at settings click on sounds. Then click on volume and scroll down until you get to power on and click on that and from there you can turn off that sound.
