Investigate the fuel line inside the fuel tank. Sounds like it may be split or cracked, or broken off. The line has a weighted pick up filter, and it is very common for the line to crack or break off so that when tilted, the line is above the fuel level.
is the engine getting fuel? is the gas from last season?gas only last for 30 days in small engines if its been let to long the carb might need a good cleaning
The inlet needle in the carb is leaking, it may be the activating arm has stuck, remove the float bowl and gently work the float up and down a few times, make sure the needle is moving. Failing that replace the needle valve.
the check engine light may be due to the gauge being bad, the first thing to do is have the computer scanned and find out what codes are stored, thse codes will give a general idea of where the problem is,
If fuel leaked into the engine over the winter, it could cause very hard-to-pull problems. Remove the plug, ignition off, with the cylinder/head down, pull it through vigorously to see if expels any fuel. Replace last year's fuel with fresh fuel mix. It's a good idea to allow the engine to run out of fuel before storage. Does this engine have a compression release? If so, it may need cleaning to work properly. Hope this helps!
The jets in carbs are really small and clog easily. If you stored your mower with gas in it start by replacing the gas. Remove the air filter and prime the carb. Start the engine and place your fingers over the air intake on the carb. This will cause the engine to stall as it will be starved for air. It will also create a powerful suction on the jets and possibly dislodge a blockage. Prime the engine again and start. If does not continue to run, repeat the steps again. If after 3-4 tries your engine wont run you will have to remove the carb and clean the jets manually. The reason your engine runs for a short time is because it is burning the fuel that you put in there by priming it. After that the fuel comes through the jets in the carb and if these jets are clogged the engine will die.
