I've had my linkys wireless router WRT54GS for about 6 months. It just stop working. I replaced it with my old linky wired router and it works fine, so I know I've hooked it up correctly. Unfortunately, I don't have the receipt. I bought it at "Best Buy". Can't figure out what's wrong; I've tried recycling the power by unpluging the unit; I've also tried holding the reset button for up to one minute; no luck. Any ideas?

Hi,
Apparently your WRT54GS is defective. This can be brought about by a power surge or near lightning strike.
If after unplugging and/or the hard reset (multiple times) it will not function as before, chances are that it is really dead. And since you have lost your receipt, you will have no supporting documents to request for a replacement. Unfortunately there are no other reasonable option for you but to junk the unit. You are still lucky in a way, normally when routers go bad because of a power surge or near lightning strike, LAN devices attached to it also gets fried.
Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.

Follow this instructions:1. connect via hard wired connection using your PC (network cable)2. open your internet explorer or any browser.3. type the numbers 192.168.1.1 on the address bar4. you will be routed to your router's settings, type admin for USERNAME: and admin for PASSWORD.5. look for the basic setup/settings6. look for the wireless settings7. under your SSID comes the WEP or WPA-PSK option8. that is your wi-fi password, then modified it and remember the password you use for you will need to enter it on your pc when you are connecting via wireless connection.you can select ASCII for password. it should be alpha numeric or combination of letters and numbers.9. select save and apply. then you are good to go and your wifi is now secured thanks for choosing www.fixya.com and kindis ly rate this post
If you cannot access the administrator pages (the setup screen) from a wire connected PC, there is a small reset button on the back of the router. Press the reset button and hold it for at least 30 seconds to reset the router back to the default settings.
1. Plug one CAT-5 LAN cable into the port labeled WAN on Linksys then the other end into the cable Modem where your PC is normally
2. now take a separate Cat-5 LAN cable adn plug it into port 1 on the linksys - the other end into your PC NIC
3. Power cycle Cable Modem (remove battery), linksys, PC this will clear the MAC addresses
4. turn on modem, linksys then pc
5. loging to windows - open IE on address bar type 192.168.1.1 - this should be the default address of your router (unless you've changed your subnet) in which case I recommend you factory default the route and use default settings. after typing teh 192.1386.1.1 you should see the linksys login
6. Now try yahoo.com in IE, the routers factory setting for DHCP should work fine without any end user programming from you.
The reason for the CD is to configure the router to your cable modem. So if you reinstalled your computer you do not need the CD again. All you need to do is set the computer's Gateway back to your router. The links below will help you do this.
Hi. First issue why your laptop cant connect to your router is regarding witht the password. Make sure that you are typing in the correct password of your router. Check the type of authentication used e.g WPA, WEP etc. Second issue, is this the first time you used windows 7 OS in connecting to your router. There are issues in linkys routers that is not compatible with windows 7 and you need firmware upgrade for your router. You can also try to test the connectivity using a wired conncetion (LAN cable) conncet directly to your router nd se if you were able to get an internet concetion using a wired connection.
You will need to check the wireless settings of the router. Is there any computer online using the router. check the IP address on that computer. If yes then you can open the router set up page on that computer. router set up page is the page where you can check all the router settings. Click Here for more information about the routers and network
hello, Anytime windows gets stuck "aquireing the connection" there is usually a security key thats not entered correctly. Do you know if you configured your wireless network for "wpa" or "wep" ? If so, we need to get that setup on your Laptop.
Same thing happened to me. 6 months and then bam, it stopped routing.
