Just got a Sony mega Storage 300CD; no owner's manual; does it need a amplifier and speakers? What significant info would a novice need to know? I'd like to stick it in the top shelf of the linen closet and hook up some speakers to have "sort of surround sound" if possible. thanks so much for your help.

Yes, it needs all of the above. It's ONLY a CD player.
A novice would need to know a little about receivers, source (input) components (like this CD player, DVD players, tapoe decks, turntables) and speakers.
A basic receiver provides central connection, AM/FM radio, control (source selection, volume, tone), usually preamplification for phono, and amplification for at least 2 speaker channels.
