There should be a pusher that is attached to a spring. If the spring broke, or the pusher is missing the staples will not stay in place.
If you can locate a model number on the tool, you go to bostitch.com to find the parts you may need

yes they are, I would double check the guage and shape of the staples for this tool to ensure they are correct. If you give me the model number I will find what guage you need and get back to you.

The depth is set by the bumper and the bumper spacer. Are you sure these were put back in? the air pressure only makes a small difference on the depth...
