The screen turn completly red after about 20 min being on

Several months ago it started having curved red lines accross the screen. Then picture started to seem darker and more red so I adjusted color several till there was no more to adjust. A couple of days ago now when you turn it on the screen turns completly red after about 20 min being on. I assume this a bad sign for my bank account:) I don't suppose there is just some gizmo that I could just pull out and plug in a new one is there?

I have the exact same problem with the red lines and darker red picture.  It also now has convergence problem with green warping down at the bottom and red warping up at the top.

Usually that is a sign that your red picture tube is ailing. However there is a chance that it can be adjusted out, at least buy you time worst case. There is a voltage control in the front of the TV, you have to remove the bottom front half of tv to get to it. Some Sony's have 2 screws hiding at the bottom of set in front hidden behind 2 plastic covers, others just have screws along the backside.Be careful there are wires to front panel attached so remove slowly and leave wires on just move it out of your way..Once you remove that there is a small access panel to take off. You will see the voltage control (small plastic square with 6 knobs) The top knobs are focus controls for each tube the bottoms are for voltage adjust. The far right knobs are for red.So you can turn the red voltage control SLOWLY to the left, this will reduce voltage.Reduce until you see the red lines disappear. If you go too far one way or the other with the voltage control the tv will shut down and you'll waste time readjusting and turning set on until it stays on. If you can't adjust it enough to get all the red out without shuting down tv tube is in too bad of shape.

Hi. I own a Sony KP-51WS500 rear projection system where several months ago the red arced lines started to appear accross the entire screen, dim at first but growing in intensity. In the last few days the...

This is a model prone to all three tubes failing in this way. When the sets were less than a year old there was a program from Sony to replace all three tubes--it seems the wrong tubes were installed.

The tubes are now only available on a rebuild basis--take out old one and send out for rebuild and very expensive.

An alternative exists, it involves (in your case red) getting at the RED SCREEN CONTROL AND TURNING IT DOWN UNTIL THE SET DOES NOT SHUT DOWN and then adjusting it further. No parts will be involved and should take less than 20 minutes.

Set will shut down if screen turns bright red, green or blue as it detects too much current is being drawn.

If you want to know how to attempt this, rate this solution as very helpful and I will assist you.

Television picture does not work when first turned on

It seems that there are capacitors in the power supply which have dried or leaked, It is vurtually impossible to diagnose sight unseen however, the fact that it effected the three colours I envisage that problem to be associated with the supply, also the curving effect makes me look there, it seems that there is a ripple in the AC. I am assuming that it would take around 1.5hrs and cost of caps. This is working on the assumption that the fault is what I have listed without looking at it. Cost may be around the $150-$250 but don't quote me, I can't see the fault so it is an educated guess only...Phil

ITS PROBABLY THE RED PICTURE TUB (CRT). IT LOOKS EASY TO INSTALL, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE SCREEN ONCE IT IS INSTALLED. THE PART IS $3OO. TRY TO FIND SOMEONE TO INSTALL IT FOR $150 OR LESS. HERE IS A WEBSITE TO HELP YOU MAKE ADJUSTMENT IN THE FUTURE ON YOU OWN.
