Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

Try replacing the inverter board. If that don't help then the next step is the back light, but replacing it is a bi.ch, so most people just replace the whole screen. Also, check that the video cable wire is not crimped/cut and securely fastened onto the logic board.

My mac powerbook is displaying a folder which flashes between a question mark and a icon in the middle of the folder it stays on the grey start up screen and doesnt start up any suggestion???

Your PB can't find the system. Most likely you hard drive is no longer working. To check that this is the case, start up from the discs that came with your computer. You will need to replace the hard drive then re-install the operating system off those discs. I hope you had a backup of your data!

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

Suchisart,
If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

Don't forget to vote and leave us some feedback. :)

it could be the inverter to the display, or the graphics chipset or the connection between them.

Powerbook Aluminum G4 15 booting up problem

The backup battery connects directly to the logic board. From the symptoms you are describing (rather clearly, thank you), it seems apparent that your logic board may be faulty.
There are two more things you can try.
1) Reset Open Firmware: Unplug-replug your backup battery, then boot the system holding down Control-Option-O-F. Your machine will boot into Open Firmware. Type the following commands, pressing the "return" key at the end of each one:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset all
Your machine should restart at this point. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise,
2) Reset the Power Manager. Turn the machine all the way off (no power). Simultaneously press Shift-Control-Option-power button, then release. (Do not press the fn (Function) key during this sequence.) Wait five seconds, then press the power button. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise, you will need to see a man about a logic board, which is probably not a cost-effective repair on a 1GHz G4.

A few tries, go to the apple in the top left and choose SYSTEM PREFERENCES....it should bring you to:

f002663.png

In the HARDWARE row you should see DISPLAYS. Select that and you will be at:
0ceaf58.png

You have the DETECT DISPLAYS button, and also CLICK the "Show displays in menu bar" box, so you dont have to keep going through menus to configure.

If you look at the F7 key, to the right of the NUM LOCK key (F6), that key allows you to switch from expanded to mirroring or vice versa.

You can also check Apple's Knowledge base....
