Question about Samsung Yepp YP-Z5AB / YP-Z5AS MP3 Player
I've had my YP-Z5 for about nine months now, and some time ago it started getting weird. At first, I noticed that my background reseted to the default, blue one every time I restarted the mp3. The clock in the upper-left corner also changed from 24h-format to 12h each time as well. Also, the only way to reach my songs are from "Browse Files" (The Recordings are still there though). I've tried to press the reset button several times, but it won't help any. The worst problem is that the mp3 refuses to connect to my PC! When I plug it with the USB-cord, it says "Connecting..." like usual, but instead of changing to "Connected" it zaps back to the menu where I can listen to music. Every now and then, it makes a new attempt at connecting, but never succeeds. I can still charge it, though. It worked perfectly fine before, and we haven't really done anything with the PC since then. ANY kind of help would be very appreciated!
This might help getting it connected to the computer.
UMS mode allows the Z5 to interface to the computer as if it were a removable hard drive. You can then use Windows File Explorer to manage the files in the Z5.
To get into UMS mode, connect the Z5 to the USB port while simultaneously holding down the "return" button (the top of the square keypad) while connecting. This will put the player into UMS mode for that connection period only.
If you upgrade to the new firmware, you have the option of making it always connect in UMS mode.
The steps to install the latest firmware are:
(1) Download version 2.37 or newest of the Z5 firmware http://www.samsung.com.
(2) Unzip it to get the file named "Z5Update.dat".
(3) Disconnect the Z5 from the USB port.
(4) Reconnect the Z5 to the USB port while simultaneously holding down the "return" button (the top of the square keypad) while connecting. This will put the player into UMS mode for that connection period only.
(5) Open a File Explorer window, and find the YP-Z5 device.
(6) At this point, make sure the Z5 is fully charged and has at least 30MBytes of free space.
(7) Copy the file "Z5Update.dat" to the root directory of the YP-Z5 device.
(8) Now disconnect the Z5 from the USB port.
(9) The Z5 will display the option to upgrade to the new software, or to cancel.
(10) Select "Upgrade". This will power off the Z5.
(11) Connect the USB cable to the Z5. Now it will upgrade the firmware under USB power. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE USB UNTIL THE UPGRADE FINISHES. After finishing the upgrade, new firmware will be started automatically.
(12) Check the version information in the "Settings > System Info > Version" tab.
Now you can turn on the UMS only option.
Settings / System Info / UMS Only = On

I had the same problem in about 2 years but today I manage to fix it!!! I phoned around and finally I talked to someone who knew the solution. It it a software problem. He e-mailed me the program I needed.
For it to work i had to start the program, and then the computer started to look for YP-Z5 player.
I also had to reset the player first (stick a needle) in the reset hole.
Then I plugged in the player into USB while holding down the middle button, the square one. then finally my PC recognized my mp3 player!! Then it was only to follow the on screen menus:-)
The program I used is called "YP-Z5 Updater".
And it installed Version 2.43. I then updated to v.2.51.

My roommate gave me his old YP-Z5 and could not get Windows XP to detect it no matter what I tried. I plugged it into a PC running Vista, and it detected it with no problem. Then using Vista I upgraded the player to the latest firmware using the instructions above, and it is now working fine on XP.

I've got this problem too. Spoken to Samsung and they don't seem to be able to help. UMS mode on or off makes no difference and unable to update firmware as computer is not recognising the device. Think the internal software has given up the ghost. Looks like we got some real problems here!

Hi, I recently spoke to the tchnicians from Samsung who put me onto the Samsung website where you can download the Samsung media Player. That also allows you to sync the unit. Thanks

SOURCE: Samsung YP-z5 won't connect to the PC!
i had a similiar problem with mine so i sent it back as it was still on guarantee. i recieved a new one and the old fixed one on top . i was relly pleased with this but now my new ones playing up and simply wont go to the menu, it just stays on the samsung logo screen. if yours is still in guaratee time then i would advise for you to send it back. there are quite a few people on the internet who are also experiencing the same problems. there is obviousl something wrong with the technical side of things to do with the mp3.

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

First thing you can do here is to reset the unit to its default settings so all settings will be clear and that will help fixing this problem....and also try connecting this unit to a different computer and check if it will be conencted fine because if it will stay connected to you can update of flash the software for this ....

The same thing happened to me. All fine for over a year and now I can't get at any of the music, or load anything on to it.

I have the same problem as soon as i plug my mp3 into my computer it says its connecting and will still on the sme screen and my xp comptuer doesn't reconise it n says its unknown and i have tryed to reset it but it never works , i have had my mp3 from about september 2007 .I would love to find out how to solve the problem
I'm having the same problems you all are describing. I've only had the player for 11 months. One day it was working, the next day it wasn't. And the computer no longer recognizes it. Samsung was no help, they said to send it back to Amazon where I bought it. Now that I'm doing a bit of research online I see a LOT of people are having these problems. I was going to buy a new one, but now that I see how many people have had problems with theirs, I'm more set on spreading the word to people not to purchase them. I'm through with Samsung.
I have same problem exactly, only i deleted everything off it for christmas and put a load of christmas music on it for the family now that's all that is on there, i guess i'm only using it once a year :-(
I bought my YP-Z5AB in Feb 07. Now, just over 12 months later (just out of warranty period as usual), it has started malfunctioning. When connected to the pc, it display says "connecting" for a few seconds and then reverts back to the usual interface - it doesn't actually connect to the pc. The pc doesn't recognise the device, so I can't do anything with it. In addition, the music files are now only accessible via the "browse files" function, and the battery isn't recharging.
I have tried all the following - non of which have helped:
1) Pressing the reset button.
2) Switching the device to UMS mode - whereby the pc should recognise it as a removeable harddrive.
3) Contacting Samsung (whose customer service is some of the worst I've encountered). They advised that I should speak to Amazon (where I purchased it), as they could do nothing for me.
All in all, this seemed a good product initially, but the fact that it's broken down after a year really isn't acceptable, and Samsung customer service are a disgrace. I would recommend avoiding Samsung products all together.
Ive had my yp-z5 for 10 months. One morning i tried to scroll to get to my music by touching the keypad lightly. Instead of scrolling up one bit when tapping it lightly, it scrolled all the way up which meant i could only open the 'music' menu and the 'now playing' menu. ??
I decided to reset it and pressed the reset button. Gratefully the keypad worked now but When i tried to connect to my xp it said connecting, then went back to the normal screen!
Some of the buttons dont work and some of my music (WMA format) Doesnt play, just says 'system error'.
Considering buying an ipod if i cant get it fixed
wont connect to the pc
Mines is the exact same! I have to go to browser files to get my songs and it just won't connect to my computer! Holding the return button while connecting it doesnt work and i can't find the Z5 update to install! Are there any other solutions? Can someone PLEASE help me!
I also have the same problem, all my music is in the browser file now, and my computer does not recognise it, I even brought a new data cable thinking that was the problem! Very frustrating, and annoying as this sounds a common fault, just after warranty!! When I go on to version it says system error. I hope someone discovers a cure (buy an ipod!)
Have same problems. Worst thing is, cannot upgrade firmware, as PC doesn't recognise device anyway (even in UMS). Reset doesn't do anything, and when I check for Version in System Info, it displays System Error. Apparently some file inside the YP-Z5 must be corrupted, but how can it be fixed when it's impossible to access the device via pc and the reset button or 'reset settings' option don't have any effect?
mine does all that also-but it WONT CHARGE!
Same here, nothing works. I tried everything possible and it seems like I can only throw away, though I like my device :(
