I assume your camera is on. Menu is showing and so on. Sometimes, you (accidentally) just turned the mode dail to another setting then automatic, or the one you are used to. If it then is to dark, the camera won't work. Put the dail on automatic (green camera logo) and try again. Also check if the lens is in the lock position. If you never changed any settings in the menu's just reset the camera to the factory settings and start over in automatic mode.

It thinks that the SD card is full - try re-formatting if you have no photos there. The SD functions the same as a PC hard drive, and if the directory 'tracks' are corrupt, anything could happen. Else try a new SD card.

go into the camera settings and check the storage selection..
it may have internal memory as well as the card

If you can get the pics using a card reader, why are you insisting on using the camera and USB cord? Pros always use a card reader.

The only thing I can think of remove the SD Card, start camera, and go into the menu, check to make sure there are no pictures on the internal memory, if there are! erase them and restart camera and power off, re-install card and hopefully you are good to go. If no change! have the camera shop run a quick check.
I have a mains/USB charger and my Nikon Coolpix S2550 does not charge from it but WILL from a laptop. The clue is the flash LED should flash, on charge, slowly - less than one a second. The 'wall' charger makes that flash perhaps twice a second.
And of course the laptop will tell you the charge status.
