Oven ignites but will not shut down at all, it just keep burning not matter what the temp. is set at. It is a nat. gas hookup & tonight I had to shut the gas main off (before then shutting the in line gas valve off where it connects behind the stove) & the oven still tried to keep going until the electrical cord was also unplugged.

SOURCE: Tappan Oven overheats!!

If you have electronic controls, you'll need either the temperature probe (about $60.00) or the clock (about $150.00). You can test the temperature probe from behind the machine. It should read about 1080 ohms at room temperature. if the probe is good, replace the clock.

If you have mechanical oven controls, you need a new thermostat. Is the too high temp consistent? (i.e. runs at 375F +/- 25F?) If so, you can usually adjust the thermostat **** to read closer to the actual temperature.

When I turn the oven down the gas goes off and have to start again

read the user manual as the temp should be thermostat controlled were with gas there is always a pilot light burning when the oven is in use and when the set temp is reached the gas burner is shut off and when the temp fall below set point , the gas is turned on again and the pilot light starts the burner
by using the timer , when the time is reached the gas is turned off and of course you will have to relight it
if you do not have a user manual , download one from google or talk with a gas repair shop

I have a May tag Neptune Nat gas. It starts and lights the flame but after 11/2 to 2 min the flame shuts off Checked the temp sensor and has continuity. What could be shutting the gas off? Thanks

The air passage may be blocked, and it's shutting the flame down to keep from burning your house down. Check the lint trap and the exhaust hose/exterior fitting for blockage.

Does the pilot light stay lit if you continually depress the control valve?
If the pilot light stays lit as long as you keep the valve depressed, then the problem is the thermocouple is bad. The pilot light makes enough electricity via the thermocouple to hold open the gas valve that feeds the burners. If the thermocouple fails to produce that electricity, the gas valve will shut down and switch off the gas flow to the whole unit.

Kenmore oven shuts off before preheated

On any gas appliance there is a high and a low limit temp stat which could be indipendant or on the gas valve it's self, that is faulty.
When the oven reaches temp, it cuts out. sounds like faulty over heat stat.

My kenmore gas oven won't heat. I turn to dial to temp i want can smell gas building up in oven and can see a glow in bottom of oven but will not ignite. Sometimes if I turn on a cooking eye I can then...

When the bake igniter becomes weak or burns out, your oven would not bake. The bake igniter is usually mounted on the oven burner. It's about 1 inch by 4-8 inches (depending on the model), and comes in round or flat styles. If you don't see the igniter glow at all, it's probably burned out. Replace the igniter if found defective. Note: one of the exceptions could be that your oven is set to automatic mode instead of manual. If this is the case, set your oven to manual mode and check again.

If the bake igniter glows red and not bright yellow or white, it is probably because it is too weak. When this happens, the safety valve would not let the gas out into the oven burner. A weak igniter must be replaced.

A faulty igniter is probably the most common cause, however there are others:

-- defective thermostat
-- defective selector switch
-- defective gas safety valve
-- defective gas valve coils

No matter what temperature I set my electric range oven to, the temperature continues to rise.  I stopped use the oven because i keep burning things.

sounds like a bad oven thermostat(run away temp), thermistor deopending on age, but that would shut off witha fault code after awhile,

Oven not working properly

I just solved this problem with my GE gas range. I waited forever for the oven to warm up. The igniter would glow, light the burner and burn for a minute or so and go out. It would repeat this process till oven reached operating temp, which took forever. Problem is in the igniter. It may be glowing, but it is not letting the gas valve stay open, because it is not hot enough to create resistance in it to keep gas valve open. I had replaced the thermostat thinking it was the problem. The good part about it was I could take it back because my buddy works at supply house. Once the igniter was replaced, the oven fired up and stayed lit till operating temp was reached. It will also hold the oven temp much better. Oh yea, the igniter will stay glowing while the burner is on. Hope this helps.
