I have a PT-53TW53 that has a green bow across the bottom. The other 2 colors are perfect. Is the green gun replaceable?

    • I have a Panasonic Model #PT-47WXC43G.

    • 1st: I replaced the convergence IC's STK 392-110 due to a convergence problem.

    • 2nd: After the repairs, I attempted to turn on the TV and it tried to power up but turned itself off immediantly then the power light blinks 3 times every five seconds.

    • There is no sound or picture now.

    • I feel that I performed a good soldering job but anything could have happened.

    • Anyone know of something I may have done wrong or that I may have missed?

    • Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for any help before i have to call a technician!

My TV too got a "bow" at the bottom of the screen. Seem like many suggested replacing this STK chip and also it's $10/each so I went ahead buy 2 to replace the 2 in my TV.

Below is a pic of the inside of my projector TV with the STK-392-110 circled in green and as you can see it is easy to ID due to the HUGE heat sink that it mount on to help dissipate the heat. (sorry for the small size since Fixya limit the file size to 150KB)

Panasonic PT-47WX53 G - 222a5ee.jpg

I unplugged the TV for more then 3 days and that seem to discharged most of the components.

So here are the steps I take to do the fixing.
1) Before I even order the chip I open it up to verify the part number and it was STK-392-110. Did many research try to find as much as I could about this chip and make sure I order the correct one... so I made the order. While waiting for the product, the TV had been unplug ever since.

2) Well, in order to even get to the inside I need to dismount the back panel. So it had stayed open ever since, of cause out of reach of children.

3) The components arrived and I prepared:
- soldering iron
- solder
- heat sink compound (used mainly to fill in a good gap for CPU heatsink inside computer)
- and solder sucker (the sucker later I found to be useless).
- Flashlights
- Screw driver
- Plier.

O, and my brother offer his help which I found to be very useful. My 2 hands weren't enough to do this work.

4) Removed the 4 screws which I marked with the yellow arrow inside the pic.

5) I didn't want to remove any cable afraid that it might create other problems but had to remove about 3 cables to make it easier to lift and move the board around a little while fixing.

6) Removed 4 screws that mount the chip to it's heat sink using a very short screwdriver. Very little space to work with.

7) It was extremely hard to remove the old chip with the board still cabled to the TV. Many times I was tempted to disconnect all the cables. What prevent me from doing so was I couldn't think of a good way to document all the cables that I disconnect and there are just too many (IMO). I did take many pics just in case.
Anyway, what I did might not be the best way but it worked. I tip the chip back and forth to weaken the pins to a point that it broke. It took forever but it did work. After the chip broke off that I can desolder and remove each pin with the plier. Again with the little space to work with that made me want to remove it from the TV. The pins holes were still very messy and full of solder. My brother came up with a way to clean the hole using stripped wires. When the stranded strip wires touch the liquid solder, it help suck the solder out of the hole. I'm sure there are better ways to clean the holes.

8) We had a little hard time putting the new chip in b/c a few pins bended a little and not align with the holes on board. And when added the compound to the chip, it made it even harder since now the chip need to stay away from the heat sink or else it'll stick to the heatsink. Finally we got the new chip in the holes on the PCB with the compound and all, so it just a matter of screwing the chip onto this heat sink.
9) Turn on TV and pic is 99% perfect again. Why not 100% U might ask.. b/c I saw a tiny out of align colors on the left of the screen. Not very noticeable but I can see it when I pay close attention.

Cost for the two chips were $20 included shipping. Hey, it's a lot cheaper then buy new TV and only 2 chips trashed instead of the entire TV. Anyway, I think I knew which chip went bad. Because one chip had hardly any of the compound. This compound help the transfer of heat to the heat sink.

Hope this help someone.

Zenith R57W46 bottom bowing and color off and double lettering

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Double Image Red and Green

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick email and they will put one together for you. Their kits includes photo instruction guides, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

My T.V. has a funny color .. more of double viewing with purple and green what can I do to fix this?

Your set has a problem with its convergence circuitry. In many cases this can be simply failure of solder connections to the output integrated circuits due to the heat they generate, and resoldering them fixes the trouble. This is a repair you might be able to try for yourself if you have experience with electronic soldering. Or there might be component failure which would require the equipment to isolate and replace the bad parts, which is a repair level best left to professionals. In some cases where the set has digital convergence, the failure might be in the computer control portion. This means the repair might range from only a very few dollars in parts to quite a lot of dollars, plus whatever labor rate the servicer charges. If you aren't looking for an excuse to replace the set, getting an estimate on a professional repair would be the best suggestion.

Degaussing is deliberately applying a magnetic field to the face of a picture tube. This is done to neutralize the effect of other magnetic fields that can cause color distortion. Degaussing isn't done in projection sets because they have separate tubes for each color.

Screen is bowed (top and bottom) Color has a green and purple tint?

Your convergence has failed and needs to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed. You can call in a repair shop or you can get the parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com and do the repair yourself. Its a fairly easy DIY fix.

Has anyone had problems with connecting an 'HDMI to HDMI + SPDIF + RCA L / R Audio Extractor Converter (HDMI input,HDMI+ Audio output)' to a Panasonic PT-53TW53? I have a TiVo Premiere hooked up to my Panasonic PT-53TW53. I use the HDMI out, and RCA R+L outputs on the TiVo, and hook up to the digital in connections on the TV. The conversion of the HDMI out is via an HDMI to DVI cable. This has worked perfectly for years, but recently I wanted to disconnect the TiVo and replace with my Roku or Amazon Fire TV. Both have a single HDMI output. So I purchased an AGPtek HDMI to HDMI + SPDIF + RCA L / R Audio Extractor Converter (HDMI input, HDMI+ Audio output) box, hooking up the HDMI output from the Roku or Fire TV to the input on the extractor/converter, and simply disconnecting the HDMI to DVI and RCA R+L outputs from the TiVo, and plugging them into the outputs on the converter/extractor. The converter/extractor has a 3 position switch: PASS, 2CH audio, or 5.1CH (via and SPDIF or Toslink cable). I have had 2 of these converter/extractors, and with both the Roku and Fire TV I got the same results with both converter/extractors: With the switch on 2CH, which is where I understand I should get HDMI video and 2CH RCA audio, all I get is the RCA audio. No video. If I switch to PASS I get video with no audio. Of course on the 5.1 setting I get nothing, since the TV does not support SPDIF. Yet I see reviews all over Amazon indicating folks are using this converter/extractor for this very purpose, and it is working fine. I can't possibly imagine that it is some sort of incompatibility issue with the TV, since the TiVo has worked (and continues to) fine for years. Any ideas?
