It is actually a kohler 5000 watt confidant rv generator. The generator quit running. The motor did not have any knocks and the generator was putting out voltage before it quit. It was misfiring just before it stopped running. I believe the problem is in the ignition system but I am not sure. The generator has 1944 hours on it and has some minor oil leaks. Is it better just to buy a new one or attempt to fix it. How much would it cost?
I have fixed Dozens of generators and around 70-80% of starting- none running problems are due to either A) Debris soil dust or Water in the Carb (don't ask me where it comes from but it gets through or B) Jets blocked with same or just Electrolytic Crud, dissimilar metals Brass Jet in Allot Carb etc. First step drain tank & carburettor bowl (screw or bolt in bottom usually, run a needle or similar though the main jet (up in centre in Honda type designs) when sure all is clear, fit a $1-$2 small paper in-line fuel filter and try again. The standard filters are too coarse and let in fine dust-rust all the time, hope this helps always works for me, Good Luck from England!
I used to work at a repair shop for kohler 98 bucks an hour to check it out. and for them to repair who knows?. i would do my best if not in a hurry to figure it out on my own. you can purchsae a service manual and stick with your basics; spark gas, and from there go deeper.
