Hi, sounds like what is known as the blue screen of death. You can try reseting your operating system to an earlier time, before the problem began, by pressing the ESC or Del key during bootup, this will give you the option to boot into safe mode, from where you can attempt the reset. Or you can insert the CD that came with your compaq and perform a system restore. Both of these options will not remove any saved data.
u can do it by insering xp cd nd go for a repair option dont format it just repair it then u can restore all ur data nd softwares time consuming will be more bcoz it depends upon ur data....
