My mother's tv is hooked up to a cable box.
At random times, the tv will turn off and go to a black screen - cable box is still on.
When this happens the red power light will blink on and off every few seconds. Unplugging the tv from the wall and turning on the tv with the power button will turn on set again and it work fine for a while then the pattern repeats.

I have the same problem. It only occurs with my HD DVR (HDMI cable), not my blue ray (HDMI cable), or my xbox and wii (component video). Video and audio cutout is random and drives the family nuts. I am desperate for a solution.
Go into the TV's closed-caption settings and turn off captioning. You'll find it's set for "text" mode right now. What's happening is that in text mode, the set blanks out the part of the screen where the text will go but there isn't any. On channels or programs where captions aren't being broadcast you don't see anything. With the captions turned off the box will go away.
The Panasonic call center helped us with this one. Our Closed Captioning had been turned on through the TV settings. This made us have a black box with everything besides our cable. Turning off CC on our TV Main Menu solved the problem for us.
