The washing machine was humming when I went to transfer the load to the dryer. The only display was - door locked. Pushing the button did not open the door. I pulled the electrical cord to stop the power. I then replaced the plug and turned the power back on but only got the same hum with the same display and still cannot get the wet clothing out of the machine. I can't contact GE until Monday and online I couldn't schedule a service call until a week from Monday, May 5, 2009. Is there any way I can get the door opened? I am worried my clothes will be ruined if I have to wait 9 days for service.
Your drain pump is likely clogged, and is equipped with a clean out port. remove lower cover by 3 phillips screws on bottom front. you see the drain pump up front to the right. If there is a lot of water left in machine then have bucket/pan avail and plenty of towels. wet dry shop vac helps. you can open door and remove clothes from here. reach up on right side to where the latch is on inside (you have to go by feel) and find small round pull tab on bottom of latch/lock asm, and pull down, this will unlock door. carefull of water level when opening door.
to fix problem, unscrew cap on pump asm. water will pour out, and a tray will slide out with debris clogging pump. look inside housing for remaining ****. using finger check impeller area on right..
reassemble. machine should work perfect now. Pump is designed to be cleaned out and will not void warranty. newer machines have access port cut in panel for this clean out area.

Thank you for your help. I was able to unplug and plug in the electrical cord and turn the dial repeated times until the door finally unlocked. I have removed the clothes, rinsed, hand wringing them and am now drying them. The tub does have water in it and you are probably correct that the pump is not working but being a 72 year old arthritic lady, I am unable to clean the clogged pump. I can't even remove the lower cover. I will contact GE for service tomorrow as I have an extended warranty.
Thanks again!
