SOURCE: How to detect two IDE drives with same brand

Put both drives on the same ribbon cable, both drives set to cable select <CS>. the bios will then detect them as primary and secondary.New drives are RAW and therefore not detected by any Operating system until formated. You can use seatools from seagates website to install and format the drive or use disk manager in windows.
Partitioning the drive in Windows XP / Windows 2000 (for systems where this is the 2nd drive in the system).

  1. Boot into Windows XP.
  2. Open Computer Management and select Disk Management.
  3. Initialize the drive.
  4. Partition the drive.
  5. Format the drive.
  6. Assign the drive letter.
  7. Initiate changes.

SOURCE: SATA Hard Drive Type The Dell Optiplex GX280 Takes?

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

Regards.

Testimonial: "thanks, ill look into that. how do you update the bios? (i have never had to do it before) do you burn the update to a cd/floppy and boot from it? Cheers again!"

SOURCE: i have a dell optiplex

maybe the hard drive is not yet recognized by the system. try to reformat your hard drive by using disc management. got to control panel, performance and maintenance, administrative tools, computer management. under storage, click disc management, right click on the new hard disc drive and click format.

HDD Upgrade

That model has standard IDE interface for hard drive. Don't think 500 GB or higher comes with that interface. The standard now is SATA interface for hard drives. Here is a lnk to the owner's manual for you model:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-gx60_user%27s%20guide_en-us.pdf
You tell the difference between standard IDE and SATA in that the standard IDE interface uses a wide flat ribbon cable to connect to the drive. SATA uses a small thin cable as shon in the following link:

Recover data from seagate barracuda 7200.10

External hard drive case, which comes with its own PSU AC/DC power pack.
They come in IDE and SATA flavours, some with extra cables to convert IDE<>SATA.
Take HDD with to computer retailer so physical dimension can be matched.

Require replacement power/data pcb for a seagate barracuda 7200.11 1000Gbytes part number on PCB is 2HBAHNRQ

Contact your local computer store, a computer technician/data recovery technician may have just that circuit for you to use and transfer your data onto a new hard drive.

You may also try to contact Seagate in this regard, they offer 3 year warranty on all Barracuda hard drives.

Take care!

Harddrive

Hi, Looks like it will be a motherboard issue not Maxtor (ATA) and Barracuda (SATA) combination. So the question really would be if your motherboard would accept and recognize the Barracuda SATA. Post back with your motherboard details, (brand/model/version). Kind regards.
