I'm the tech coordinator for a high school. Our principal won't buy color ink for our printers. I have an Epson C66 that has a full black cartridge, but the colors are empty - and it will not print. It just keeps giving me the message that the colors are empty. I've gone in to Advanced settings and checked Print in Black Only, but the Apply button is grayed out. Will this printer even work without the color cartridges?
Epson printers won't really print if one cartridge is not detected or detected as empty. the only option that i can suggest to you is that, buy a continous ink kit at any ink refilling station in your place. i highly recommend that dont leave a cartridge empty with ink cause it might clog your printhead. using a continous ink system's cartridge is auto reset, whenever the printer says that the cartridge is empty, it will automatically resets itself. ink refill kit comes with 100+ml of ink per color i think. and it is much cheaper using original epson ink.
I have the same problem, it really makes me furious! I never heard about a continous ink kit, or a chip re-setter. What is this and where can I buy it? I heard that it helps somehow to trick the computer into thinking there is some ink there, when actually it isn't.
Sometimes you can fool the printer ink settings by removing ink cartridges ,give them a shake reinstall . You may need to reboot the power on the printer too.
I have the exact same problem with my epson RX420 printer.
When my color cartridges were running low, i went into the settings and changed it to 'print only in black and white' - a number of weeks passed and somehow the color carts came up as empty, althought i never printed anything in color.
Epson is a complete rip off.. I now have a printer with a full black ink cartridge and cant print anything until i replace the color ones (COSTING €50!!!! )which i have no use for>
My Advice to anyone =DO NOT BUY EPSON PRODUCTS/EQUIPMENT/PRINTERS.
This sort of treatment of customers/users is just evil
The best solution is also to go to 123inkjets.com The ink on here is ABSOLUTELY amazing prices. I can afford to have 10 on hand for the price of 1 set.

I have the same exact problem and i went 2 see an ink store guy and he told me that epson cartridges wouldn't work if a cartridge was empty. So i told him i didnt wanna pay to refill all the colour ones so he gave me another solution. He said he could just change the chip on the cartridge to full (but it's not really full) so that you could continue using your black and white ink.
