When I attach my Nikon D40 camera to the comnputer it says it is installing software for the camera. Then it says it cant find the software. I am at a loss as to how to fix this. It is looking for the USB driver for the D40.
I had the same problem with my D40x - I changed my USB cable to a much more robust one and all my problems went away.
You shouldn't need a driver, most OS's will recognise it as an imaging device.

What type of computer and operating system? Windows XP should detect this without any additional drivers needed.
Did you plug the camera in before using mfr CD to install software and drivers? if so, disable the device (device manager) and then remove it (add/remove hardware - control panel). Follow all the instructions (either install manual or on the instal CD) in sequence before plugging the camera in again.
