When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the the whole drive unit.

Optical drive not recognized in Bios

You have either a bad optical drive or optical port. You can still load the OS but you need to make a bootable USB drive and install that way. Or get and use an external USB optical.

also, check in your bios or for the drive settings, it may be set to only accept sata drives or the port may be disabled. some latitudes give the ability to disable or not look at a specific port.

Dell latitude c840 slows same time fans come on, approx. 4-5 minutes after start-up. Ran laptop in cool, not cold environment; no noticable improvement.

have the unit cleaned out good...if problem still exist your laptop may be on its way out

the slow down is due to a drop in power available to the processor, and this can damage it beyond repair.

Latitude C840 wont reconize optical drive and hard drive in BIOS, had loaded xp on hd did update to sp3 came back to see the progress the laptop had rebooted then the problem came up, tried two other hds...

For the hard drive you might have to go to computer and right click, then go to manage, then disk manage, then rescan disk if not just refresh it. The optical drive would have to be to go through the device manager in the system settings in the control panel and update the drivers.

My dvd plays cd but not dvds

Try using a good quality dvd cleaner first. If that does not fix the problem then it is an optics issue for the dvd & it would be cheaper to replace the drive than to try & have it fixed. Hope this helps.
