6800mp ribbon/power problem

At first a couple times my stereo didnt power up. i restarted the car and it was fine. a month later my faceplate display only worked when opened but radio was fine. now a few days ago the faceplate was acting up with opening and closing, then it stopped working all together and it looks like it might be partially open.

2 years ago? Have you checked any of the wiring for it under the hood? Any wires they may have been spliced could be corroded or simply have come apart. Take some time to look closely.

DISPLAY ON MY KENWOOD STEREO STOPPED WIORKING

Hi there,

I also created a tutorial on fixing faceplates with 2R7 resistors (refer to my tip).

But, your unit will have a different chassis, as the faceplate is also a video display.

First you need to determine if the buttons on the faceplate are operating the various functions. If the buttons are NOT operating, then the faceplate itself (or connection to the main unit) can be considered faulty.

It's highly probable that the RIBBON cable (which connects faceplate to the inside of the unit) may be defective - this is common in some Kenwood units.

Try searching Google or youtube for ribbon cable repairs etc.

Hope this leads you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Scott

Got power to cd but no display

One idea that comes to mind is,if I remmeber correctly, that model has a removeable faceplate, try this, remove the faceplate, take some denatured alcohol on a Q-tip,clean the electric contacts on the back of the faceplate and also on the front of the deck where they mate together repeatedly for about 4 to 6 times letting them dry between each time that you swab them clean, then replace the faceplate onto the deck being sure that you are seatting the faceplate completely and properly.
This has worked for me sometimes and sometimes not, its worth a try.
Good Luck !

Most of the time these radios with the displays that move up/down have a ribbon cable that may go bad and cause funny types of problems. I can not say for certain what is causing your problem withour putting it on a test bench and troubleshooting it with the proper equipment. It may also be a swtich the detects when the display has reached its open position. If the switch is bad, it may just close right back up again.

But the ribbon cable is a good start, since it gets some wear and tear every time you turn on the radio.

No display on faceplate unless I push on it

Three possible faults. Irst choice would be connector on radio you see when faceplate is removed may have some oxidation on pins. Sometimes with a small fine point file or dental pick you can try to scrape off any visible oxidation use caution not to bend any pins and be sure radio has no power . 2nd choice could be worn flex cable that connects to main p.c.b. and Third is chassis that keyboard connects to may be slightly bent causing a bad connection. I have a PDF service manual if you need it [email protected]
