Vertical line from document feeder

When I load the document feeder for faxes or copies a vertical line prints down one side. I sent a fax to a friend and her copy had the same vertial line. Interestingly the line starts about 1/4 inch from top of the page and stops about 1/4 inch fromthe bottom.

There is probably a dirt spot on the scanner glass where the document feeds in. try cleaning the thin glass under the document feed cover.

Vertical Streak on my sent faxes

Open up the document feeder and clean the scanner glass. If the streak is larger than 1/4 " wide, you have a bad scanner block.

When faxing does paper face uup or down

You load the originals print side uo on the document feeder tray or print side down on the glass.
To send a single page fax you can either load the original on document feeder tray or on the glass; to send a multi-page fax you must use the document feeder tray.

The position of the paper is the same either you copy, fax or scan.
All this is clearly explained in the user's manual, that you should read and you can download from HP support pages for you printer:

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.

Vertical line when using document feeder

Look really close at the small glass strip. There will be toner embedded in the glass. It will probably be a very thin streak though, so hard to see.
