Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera. Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)

Gr-dvl-520u trying to record or playback tape it goes into safeguard mode within 5 seconds. alternatly pressing play and still every 3 seconds advanced the playback without it going into safeguard mod

According to http://www.techlore.com/article/10974/JVC-Camcorder-Stuck-in-Safe-Mode/,

"JVC notes that you are also given a malfunction code when the unit is placed into safeguard. If it displays code 01, 02, or 06 you should remove
the battery and powersupply and wait for a while. Code 03 and 04 indicate that you should eject and reinsert the tape.

If neither of these solutions work, your only alternative is to bring it to a shop or send it to JVC for diagnosis or repair. Unfortunately, there is no other way to clear the condition."

If you are getting E03 or E04 errors on every tape you try, it sounds like a servicing is required.

My gr-d371u camcorder is having sound lapses

If you are recording over the same tape repeatedly for 6 months solid, your sound quality will drop, so yes in answer to your question here, although the tape is most likely of a good quality, it will inevitably wear out with use.

Secondly, if a new tape does not seem to fix your "Sound lapse" problem, it might be time for a quick service to have the heads cleaned and if you go to a reputable repairman, you should have it back within the hour. Cleaning the inner workings would take no more then 15-20 minutes, you can also purchase a video head cleaner that looks similar to the tape itself, but it might be a good idea to have the unit handy when you buy it. As for my expertise in this area, i have done this many times as an apprentice tv/video tech. I do not work in this field any longer, and my experience may be outdated, as new technology seems to devour the old, but the basics remain the same, if it doesn't work the way it normally does, it's time for a service.

GR-D72 Mini DV Digital Camcorder makes clicking sound when tape running

the clicking is from the capstain turning the tape -- and perhaps the metal cage holding the tape.. if it is bent then the movement of the capstain may be pushing it in an eccentric fashion.

send it in for repair.
