It would be helpful if we knew the Make, Model of laptop and the OS you are using. I suggest you try Updating or Rolling back the Wireless adapter for starters.
Wireless capability will turn on after Press Function Key (fn - Red) + F2. if wireless adapter is turn off you can turn it on at Network and searing center on control panel > Change adapter setting > Double click on disabled wireless adapter.
Make sure the wireless switch on it is ON. Then press and hold "Fn" key and press "F5" (this enables/disables wireless capability of a computer) and try to detect wireless networks.
*Wireless capability will automatically be on as lon as you have a wireless adapater or a wireless card or a built in Wireless in your motherboard that is properly installed to your computer
*you can check if the wireless card is properly install go to start - control panel network and sharing center and @ the left part of the window try to check if you will find Manage Wireless Network if not then the driver is not installed
*the driver of the wireless adater usually can be downloaded on the manufacturers website :)
Generally if you can see a wireless icon in your network settings, this would indicate you have wireless capability.
If you think you should have wireless capability but do not see it, there is a fair chance that its turned off by either a switch on your laptop or in BIOS.
If your model does not have wireless capability, even if you had a switch on the machine, if there is no internal wireless card you can't make this wireless. My suggestion would be to purchase a PCMCIA or USB wireless card that you can load to your system to make this wireless capable.
